We caught Tony Bennet when he was touring with his daughter. Gray Sargent was on guitar and he played so masterfully. I remember thinking, this guy has to have one of the best jobs in the music business, touring with Bennett for 24 years, wow. It's hard to believe that the performance was in 2013. Time flies ... it's great to see Gray on stage at Birdland in 2025 with Frank and Gary.

That’s not even an archtop huh? Flat top with a tailpiece, oval hole and a cutaway.
-
The Howard Roberts model, both Gibson and Epiphone, is an archtop, but with an oval soundhole instead of f holes. Like the original Gibson archtops.
-
Interesting, It doesn’t look like it’s got an arch in the video.

Absolutely wonderful! We saw TB at the Borgata in Atlantic CIty at what I believe was his last performance there. IIRC, the band was Gray Sargent on guitar, Marshall Wood on bass, Tom Ranier on piano, and Harold Jones on drums. They were truly stellar! It was amazing that he seemed to have full faculties when singing, given the extent of his dementia. With a mic in his hand and his band behind him, he was ageless.

Sargent is a masterful player with great taste and serious chops. It was cool to see him at Guitar Night.

This is a master class! A lot to learn from this. Can he still do it though? I think he mellowed out in recent years, which is maybe natural evolution for a jazz player?

Really loved Sally’s playing on Just Friends. Wonderful to hear a new player with such a great musical ear.

It's his wish to not have them streamed and he's respected enough that the Birdland will grant him the request.

If the same thing happened to Jimmy Bruno i think i know his response would be F them and broadcast it anyway.

That’s an interesting guitar in the thumbnail

Great to see Ed back on the bandstand!

At this point, it's almost the Vignola & Grasso Guitar Night...
A "somewhat" lame and disrespectful (but none intended) "joke" popped up in my mind just now...
- What do Pasquale Grasso and Polenta Grassa have in common?
- You (I) can't have too much of it too often...
(P's tone is the opposite of what I'd call fat or meaty, which is actually what prompted the association.
Plus the fact that if I had to choose between spending 20-30 minutes with the one or the other ...
)
You mean this one ?

It looks like Ed Cherry is playing a Sire guitar. Do you think that is right? If so it is validation for lower priced instruments.
-
Yeah alpop, looks like a Larry Carlton Sire H7V. If they came in 25.5" scale I'd have a thinline.
-
Sad to see guitar night fixture Ken Peplowski passed.
-
The mix sounds different tonight. The bass sounds electric. Vignola's guitar is not as out in front as it usually is. The mic level was way too high after the first number and there was distortion of Walkenius solo cutting in and out on the second tune. I can hardly hear Pasqualle Grasso. Seems they are working on the sound during the second tune.
-
Does anyone know if Frank uses the spruce or mahogany version of his Eastman guitar?

Stern gets a relentless amount of shit from the jazz guitar police, from the time he was in Miles’s band decades ago; he’s probably just sick and tired of asshats. Saying he just needs to get a thicker skin is silly IMHO. Instead, people should stop being asshats but the keyboard warriors who can’t hold a candle to Stern’s playing continue to spew BS.
