I'd say I only listen to generally 1920-1970. I personally find Dixiland and ragtime unlistenable, and other pre early swing unenjoyable. I like some modern guitarists, but not really anything that is some kind of "cross over" or fusion

Yes, 1920 - 1970 is about the same for me, except I love Dixieland and Ragtime (I dream of being able to play ragtime on the nylon string guitar - have managed a few rags on the steel string - The Entertainer, Powder Rag, Dallas Rag and some of the more blues-rags like Police Dog Blues, but I would love to get my fingers round some classic rags one day).

In reality, I mostly listen to the big band era - Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw. Anything with Charlie Christian, of course! Lots of modern takes on old clarinet styles - so Evan Christopher, and the like. I listen to a lot of Gypsy Jazz, and plenty of 1960s Bluenote style Hard Bop. I enjoy rhythm guitar so tend to listen to things like Bucky Pizzerelli - love his album with Scott Hamilton, and also his album of Bix Beiderbecke pieces - and anything with acoustic archtops! I actually like a bit of modern smooth jazz - don't mind some George Benson (old or new), or Earl Klugh, or Norman Brown. Saxophone-wise, I listen to a lot of Zoot Zims and Paul Desmond and Hank Mobley.

    Yes.

But if I had to pick a very specific segment, daaaaamn there's a lot of good music from 1957-1962.

I also think there's really great jazz being made right now in 2026.

All of them... There is probably jazz I dislike from all time periods but also jazz I like and love from all eras.

I don't think about things in terms of time-periods though*... More like finding artists I love and following their careers throughout whatever time...

*Having said that, I like a lot of music from c. 1965-1971.

    I like stuff that swings.

Aside from old hats putting out records. That got lost in the 1970’s. Even the Lincoln Center Band is kind of stiff compared to Sinatra at the Sands.

Electric Miles is fine, but James Brown is better and that’s a slippery slope back to The Stooges for me. I think Funhouse is a demented R&B album.

What time periods of jazz do you like?

About 4 or 5 minutes usually.

I don't go back that far if we're talking GASB. But I like those standards played by more modern players, I like seeing how they've been interpreted.

As a period, probably straddling 1959 - 60 onwards because I was awake then. Earlier than that is old and out of date :-)

guitar centric from Johnny Smith to Johnny McLaughlin

and a timely tribute to American music that the world loves from the big bands of Duke and Count
to the very cool combos of Miles from Parker to Coltrane and beyond.
