They're confusing you. If it's 8x888x then you use a bar using 2 and 3. If it's a shell-voicing - 8x88xx - then 2,3 & 4.

Too much of what too soon? Yeah I am trying to learn the shells good then I Will start having fun and playing songs with them. I cant practice right now because school is startijg soon. But when I get home I can practice 6 hours and then I Will probably know the shells perfectly and play with them.
