"Moanin'" is an interesting one...my first thought wa that I think it could have worked just fine as a single note take--if the "response" was left out.

But playing through it this morning, I don't like the call and response both on one guitar if I play chords for the response either. I think it's because there's no space between the call and the response, as opposed to on say, So What.

When I play it solo I respond with chords, but I wanted to see what a single note response would be like. I think it works well enough for someone to go "a-ha I know this one." Of course I think Moanin' is best when I have drums, bass and a horn to go along with the guitar...

Yeah, It certainly works, but for me, this tune isn't a one instrument tune. I'd actually like to hear you play just the call and fill in the response in my head, I bet that sounds great.

Billie's Bounce head, pretty much at the fastest tempo I can manage. Actually, maybe a tad too fast. The recovery after the last flourish in the melody is a little out of time, I think.

I guess, but I guess I'm also thinking of this exercise a little differently. I see it as playing a melody more or less as I would in a performance. So in a tune that has call (single line) and response (chord/choir), either call w/o response or call with full response is "the melody", single line call with single line response isn't. Something similar could be said about tunes that are fully contrapuntal (e.g., Interplay by Jim Hall/Bill Evans). So I guess I should also have replied initially in a more complete way.

Not quite sure what the thing is with this one. You're playing the melody fine but it could do with some chord punches over the Bb - Fm bit instead of just notes. And maybe elsewhere.

That's the only thing. If you're playing with your band, absolutely no prob at all I shouldn't think. Groovy tune :-)

God forbid, better to keep it real, my jokes about virtual screens may be in even worse taste (if that's possible).

So I wanted to get Autumn Leaves figured out in Bb/Gm. Not really hard, but for some reason I had a mental block on doing it in that key. I was inspired by remembering the two beautiful trees outside my office window that have spectacular fall colors, and then in a single day, every single leaf hits the ground.
My life is odd. This morning, I helped coordinate an international Zoom call for a significant commission involved in church work, then came to the office and taught a class in Egyptian Hieroglyphic (Middle Egyptian). Following that, I reviewed standards for faculty performance in preparation for an assessment meeting for our accreditation process, and ended the day with Autumn Leaves!
This is my MiK Epiphone Broadway, which I dearly love. The skinny neck seems to flex with the weather, so I have some buzz this afternoon. Every time I play this guitar I want to channel Kenny Burrell. Who wouldn't?!

The bassist I play with is adamant, Gm is the correct key for Autumn Leaves.

    Very nice BTW.

It is such an easy and pleasant melody for the pop singer.

Here is the melody of "There Will Never Be Another You" and since I didn't embellish the melody much I played with the title. I think I"m one language over the "sanity" line....

    Nicely done.

Another tune I've been playing with this afternoon. Again, I'm so used to trying to gussie it up and embellish it, play chord-melody style, etc. that I actually had trouble just playing the melody. "All the Notes" and nothing but the notes?

OK, one more and then I promise to go back to only playing melodies (which means I have to stay away from the crack pipe ... I mean the Phil Wilkinson backing tracks)

Alright -- just finished my last pass through So Danço Samba. In this case, in F.

Played the melody on the B string here because I'm doing lots of single string stuff with the melodies. And took two choruses at the end because who needs the rules, amirite ya'll?

Ideal for unaccompanied rubato. Good tune.

The first phrase sounds like "Peter and the Wolf" to my old ears.

Sounds a little like "Spring is Here", but not really. That's my best guess.

ragman ... what you might be getting from this is that the phrasing/time left a little something to be desired.
