Been trying to get the "always grooving" thing going on. Meaning, when maybe toying around, or
experimenting, then there would be no compromise in rhythm. Took the longest time working with the metronome.
So, the difference now between earlier and now - I used to get slowed down slightly, when something less familiar
was played. Or got a little hesitation in the notes - that sucks the most and was the reason to go all in with the
metronome. And now.. hah. when something like that is played, some iffy less prepared notes, I won't do the trade in the tempo.
Instead, I would stumble badly and need to retry
But I prefer that over "almost ok". I so hate the feeling that it is "almost ok".

I'm still using the metronome set on "Four to the Bar", I've been doing this for nearly 50 years.
A few weeks ago, a well known UK Pro player said I had good time.
But, in the past I've been told by teachers that I need to work on my time.

yea... some just have an internal pulse. I'm pretty sure I have one and trust it.... but I listen and know the differences between feels. I mean just having perfect time, (pulse) etc... really doesn't make you have Feel.
Note... I studied with pro drummers as a kid... lucky enough to have taken private lessons from Allan Dawson while at Berklee in early 70's ... played gigs where Steve Smith was performing...wow ... I was lucky enough to feel great time LOL. Anyway.... Personally I believe you need to be able to hear or feel longer spaces of time. Feel longer phrases...
4 and 8 bars phrases with Targets... and know rhythmic patterns and different subdivisions that imply different Targets.
Also... the big one, be able to feel the differences between triplet and straight time.
get Drum Genius.
