Why not say a 6 part arrangement for your fave kitchen appliances, including the kitchen sink.
You could do it all in Sibelius.

Jeff, pardon me for losing my temper a bit. I have had to put up with the "doubters" for some time, all who clamor for an example to demonstrate my bonafides. That is ok, but I will confide that I have a psych issue that is good for a physician, not so good for other things. I have a strong "perfectionist" streak. I have multiple recordings on my Korg hard drive and on CD-Rs. But it is hard for me to put out anything that is less than what I aim to achieve, if that makes any sense. Believe me, it is hard to deal with. I have to work with substandard equipment, lack of time to record or put up videos, my tech lag (no working camcorder or DAW), even my Sibelius is on my home PC which I have to compete with my teenage son to use - guess who wins that one.
But if you read the rest of my longer post, I have a genuine incentive to put this one out, because my Italian mother- in- law is in the terminal stages of her tragic illness, and my elderly father-in-law is caring for her nearly full time. Married more than fifty years. I want to send a message of love and strength to my wife's family and to my wife, who is bearing a great psychological strain in caring for her mother. But her time there is limited. And I am doing the 'single parent' thing for three weeks or so. Less free time.
If my posts sound 'authoritative', there just might be a reason - I might know what I'm talking about. And yes I do promote Sibelius, not as a rep or for return, but because I genuinely believe it is a tool for becoming the best musician your God-given talent and hard work will allow. I also sincerely believe that playing to a counter melody, whether it be a bass line or comping chords, is the best way to develop jazz chops, which includes playing solo chord melody. After all, as Beethoven commented, in the right hands a solo (classical) guitar is like an orchestra. Melody on top, harmonies and bass below. But you all know that. And just who do you think create musical arrangements, the plumber? If you don't know how to write music damn well, it won't sound good by chance.
As for the ridiculous assertions by some on the forum that the major and minor scales edited by Segovia are somehow inappropriate for jazz - that does not pass the "laugh test". Maybe you have heard of a guitarist popular from the Fifties and Sixties on till his death in old age - a fellow named Charlie Byrd. Now, Charlie has a video lesson of his on YT, which I can link if you like. But Charlie - who only played alongside wanna be jazz musicians like Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson, Herb Ellis, and a host of others - advocates the Segovia scales as part of his advice to jazz musicians. I just saw this video for the first time a couple of weeks ago, so I didn't take my endorsement of the scales from him. I would suggest that the video is worth your time as Charlie is a pretty good teacher, despite his lack of experience.
Anyway, banging out posts between patient visits is not conducive to reflection and even disposition. Incidentally, I wanted to post a previous recording I mentioned of Estate, My Foolish Heart, Shadow of Your Smile,...... online, so I enrolled in the "free" version of Box.com, a site the Wizard uses to post his monthly 'song of the month' (thanks for that work, Wiz - excellent job). Only problem? There is a host of videos to learn how to post stuff. Learning curve! So I have to find the time to learn that thing, too.
Anyway, I apologize for the dishwasher crack, and I know taking care of young'uns takes up a lot of time and attention. Just wait till they become teenagers...a whole other thing. I just wish people would take it from whence it comes. I do play what I hear. I don't need to use CST. I don't need to draw chord diagrams, or take lessons, though I acknowledge there are more dedicated and more talented guitarists than I. But once I get this one up and remember all the tech stuff involved in putting up YT videos, there will be more to follow. As for singing and jazz, don't tell Tony Bennett or Johnny Mathis or Sarah Vaughn that singers don't do jazz. My musical world is bigger than just instrumental music. It is all just music.
Of course, after all this BS, it better be good...right? Rich suggests I should become a trapeze artist....hang on, Rich.

I know a lot of doctors, and none of them perpetually boast about being a doctor. Huh.

Targuit, to make it easier for you, to know where to stop, here's something I sing. Just like you, I made it all myself. However, as oposed to:
I sing so badly you listen on own responsibility. Also no live instruments on this one, all mouse - MIDI programmed + freeware soundfonts. It is from those times when half lousy dynamic was much more expensive than lousy condenser of today, which is as good as the better condensers were in the day, cost today.

Further, I'm sure you are not a salesman for that notation software, because your attitude could only be anti-propagaanda: "Hey, I do all beautifull things with it, but never get anything done with this POSoftware".
It would be such a grand sibe ..., er,...., finale, you to finaly post something realy good and shove it up forum's naggers collective throaths.
I hope for your success.Last edited by Vladan; 11-04-2014 at 03:44 PM.

This is the best internet s**tstorm I have seen in years.
On the gearpage you get extra points for saving lives. Maybe T should post over there.

Well I for one cannot wait for the 10th to arrive - it is always a pleasure to hear a complete musician improvise.

I can see some of the appeal of messing about with notation programs to produce music. I use Finale (the middle-level version called Printmusic) for typing up transcriptions neatly, but I must admit I don't use it very often.
However I did mess about with it recently to make a sort of Bach harpsichord pastiche, based on Autumn Leaves. Then I added an effect in Audacity to make it sound like an old 78.
Pretty stupid really, but it whiled away a couple of hours:

Time for the anti-psychotic meds, Rich?
Let me ask you something - if it turns out that I can play my ass off, what will you say then? I warned you not to make a damned fool of yourself, but you don't take the heavy hint.
I suspect I would put Charlie Byrd's sales numbers up against yours any day. And where is your contribution to the haute musicianship on the forum, besides deranged rants?
Btw, can you actually read music? Write music? If you like, I will send you a copy so you can study. But no tabs, Rich - sorry.
-
You are right, Jehu. Many docs, especially primary care docs, are desperately unhappy and think corporate medicine sucks. If you live in the US of Amnesia and should happen to fall ill, you will soon understand.

One thing you should know, is that RichB can play. Please note I am no great fan of his attitude, but even I have to admit he can really play. Somewhere I have a recording of him playing with a trio (I think the tune was Bluesette) which as I recall came from the RMMJG group years ago. And he plays his ass off on that recording.
So I think you're flogging a dead horse if you question his musical skills. It's irritating, but there it is.
-
This is ugly and pointless.
Rich gets cranky but he can play. Targuit keeps his playing to himself. This was true last year and it will be true next year. Why go on and on about this now???
-
"Cranky?" Did you read that psychotic post, Mark? Wow! If that is an example of objectivity, then this is Alice In Wonderland! If that post by Richie does not merit a reprimand or at least a scolding as you would a fresh five year old, then please explain why.

Rich,
I agree that younger Byrd wasn't too special; though as he aged, I feel he increased his skills. The overall vibe in these videos: some-what terrible, but I think Charlie Byrd's solos are decent.
-
targuit - please, why do you keep coming back? There's nothing more to say until you post a clip of you playing your ass off. Improv, remember? Like Jeff said, I don't think anyone hear is interested in your singing or arrangements. They're probably quite nice. Let's hear you play your ass off. I really don't think you have a clue. I hate to jump in on the bandwagon here. Maybe it's because I'm not in the best of moods and am really angry and frustrated with your attitude of cluelessness, while insisting you are the only one here with the real clue. Like a broken record you keep bringing up Sibelius. Sheesh. Get on with it. Shit or get off the pot, PLEASE.

.Henri - Hopefully the passions are cooled down and the psychotics took their meds. I finished my backing tracks this morning and have rehearsed a couple of times. I think it will be quite interesting. I would be a fool to go this far out on a ledge if I didn't know what I was doing. You must understand that not all of us are tech current. Maybe it is hard for you to grok, but I don't have a problem with the music equation, but rather the tech side. For example, tonight post work, dinner (single parenting for the balance of the week), and vying with my teenage son for the computer (my turn is after midnight), I will lay down the live guitar track. I have to record the monophonic output from my Yamaha synth into the Korg D1200. Then, tomorrow morning before work lay down the vocal track and then the improvised guitar track. That is the easy part.
Once that is done, I create a CD-R of the wav. file in the Korg. Then, I put that into I tunes for conversion to a good file for YouTube. If you want to be helpful, give me a suggestion along those lines. I honestly have more trouble with creating the YT video than the recorded music. Then, using some photos to integrate with the music, I need to upload to YT in order to get a link so someone can listen. This is the hardest part for me, not the actual recording.
Give me a suggestion on the best file type for YT. That would help a lot. Btw, Henri, I find it more than a little ironic that a guy like you suggests that the arrangement and other musical skills like singing are not 'relevant' to music. Don't you write your own tunes? If it's irrelevant, why do you bother? And if singing a jazz song is not "relevant", why do you consort with singers? Or maybe you don't.

This is not to say I agree with all that Rich said. I was particularly bothered by the suggestion that a physician can't also be a good musician (-Albert Schweitzer, anyone?) but I think he offered you some sound advice and I suggest you consider the message without being distracted the messenger's rough edges.

I got some field recordings of a blender and coffee grinder, if you need some ambiance.

What will be the outcome?
