We are currently in an 11 page long thread started by another green player who thinks they need modes to start playing jazz.
You’re literally in the muck. This is it.

Didn't know that Zappa recorded that! Wild version from Frank.

This stupid thread has turned into a display of opportunism.
Here's a version of ATTYA that sounds as though it's peppered with modes but it's not. This, whatever it is, is not modal playing. So What is modal playing. This sort of standard, unless the harmonies are altered, as some recordings have been, is not modal. I tried to make the distinction clear upthread but it was greeted with hilarity as usual.
Allan had it clear as a bell when he said:
I don’t really think about modes unless we get a request for So What.

By the way, what did the OP mean by 'real songs'? I meant to ask him but didn't. Songs from the Real Book? Don't ask me.
-
Absolutely. It was now when you wrote that, it was now when I read it, it's now as I'm writing this, and it'll be now when you read it. So it's always now.

Indeed. The money is the only reason I got into jazz to start with.

There are 4 uses so it's a lot.
Tonal
1. Modes are the harmonized major scale in 2nds instead of 3rds. It's very helpful to know what the mode is of the diatonic chord you're on because it gives you the full tonality of that location. Say if you're on a 3-6, it's helpful to know how that's phrygian to aeolian even though you likely won't specifically use those scales.
Or a minor 2 is locrian, natural minor, your key, starting on the 2nd degree.
2. Modes can be used in moderation as scale choices or sub scales.
Modal
1. 1 or 2 chords with a single mode like So What.
2. Several modal chords that don't employ functional harmony, but have their lil a-functional system going on. Like Flamenco Sketches or Wayne Shorter tunes.

Thank you for indulging me.
