Most of our jazz playing colleagues on other instruments get the benefit of a formal foundation, school marching bands, "Fur Elise" piano recitals, Suzuki strings, there's still no widespread available equivalent for guitarists. So most of us get into do-it-yourself situations, and it takes us a while to get things in balance...

Guitarist 1: Gets into the shred thing. Works out 3NPS modes, sweep arpeggios, etc etc. But applying all this technical and theoretical facility in the abstract doesn't sound anything like jazz. Starts doing some deep listening to Grant Green and Kenny Burrell, cops a few licks. Now it all comes together Their conclusion : NO THEORY!

Guitarist 2: Starts with the blues, cops a bunch of licks but can't really fathom how they can be used to play over more complex changes. Start to study a bit about ii-V-I and chord tones. Now it all makes sense Their conclusion THEORY,THEORY,THEORY!!!

But in reality, both players needed a balance of theoretical understanding and street-level licks to get where they wanted. To continue the basketball analogy of previous posts , everyone sees the basket at the buzzer as the one that wins the game, but every point on the scoreboard was necessary...

I watched the fist 1:10. He never got past the "can you hear me?" followed by the "this is why you couldn't hear me" stages. With no obvious end in sight, I gave up. So I guess I'll never know what he was going to say but I also won't have find out how long it actually took for him to start saying it.

yeah i usually just skip over it with the slide bar.

the reason the vid is so offensively long is because it was a live stream, a casual thing where viewers can interact
