Unfortunately it’s usually the high IQ guys who get stuck in the theory vortex. Between them spinning their wheels and Christian forgetting to breathe, it’s a wonder there’s anyone left to play.
-
Everybody knows what "theory" is.
They just don't agree with each other.

I'm not addressing or replying to anyone in particular, but I think if folk are able/willing to engage with their own playing versus seeking out YouTube advice , they'll find the answers they're looking for
"Do I NEED to know the names of the notes I''m playing?" Maybe you notice that you're able to play a much more coherent solo on Satin Doll than on Body and Soul. Is it because you're able to 'see' the notes in the key of C a little better than you do in Db? Maybe you work on getting your view of Db up to where your view of C is. Maybe you start sounding better in Db and that inspires you to go back to C and get that even better. Maybe when you try a tune in Bb it gets a little easier to find your way around
"Do I NEED to know the modes?" Maybe you've been to a few jam sessions where they call "In Your Own Sweet Way" You find yourself really enjoying playing on the interlude, it's still definitely 'jazz' but it flows in a way that's different from a chord change every two beats. The old Real Book says Eb Dorian, but you think that the bassist is mostly playing a low Ab. How do those two things go together? Why does it remind me of some later Beatles tunes? Are there other tunes to play with this kind of 'open' feel?
I'm always hesitant to criticize another educator directly, I usually assume they're speaking to a different audience than the one that's interested in what I offer, but to dismiss triads on the top three strings as just "reggae' is some serious stylistic tunnel vision at best.... There are a ton of common-practice 'modern' comping voicings that are triads on top with one or two other notes beneath, often given further context by the bassist.(Think D triad over Eb with bassist playing an F) Not everyone wants or needs to follow the template laid out by Jim Hall on The Bridge, but you can't pretend it doesn't exist...
Best wishes for everyone's music!

Plus, anyone who thinks the top three strings are " just reggae" probably also thinks you pick those with an upstroke when playing reggae

I'd much rather talk about what song they are working on, or what scale fingerings they are doing. What comping grips they are shedding. Real stuff, on the guitar. If someone could sit across from me and comp freaking Satin Doll with Barry Harris chord scales and subs it would be a godsend. I can apply an example, I can't apply a 45 minute theory seminar.

Is this AI?

I think that's real tone.

It's wrong whatever it is lol
Sorry, Alan, I tried.

It is starting to seem plausible that it was made by your dishwasher

My dishwasher does suck.

Is this all you mean in terms of a simple example without extra stuff?

Theory should be called knowledge. That's all it is. I've been playing a long time, as have some others, and theory was mentioned here and there but never bothered me. I just picked stuff up as I went, about music, about tunes, about everything. It's just accumulated knowledge.
It wasn't till I got here that 'theory' became a controversial thing. You ought to find out why. One reason is because it's become separated from the world of playing as an intellectual thing. As soon as the mind gets involved everything becomes a problem whether it's music, religion, or anything else. It's taught academically as a separate thing so education has a lot to answer for. But the educationalists love it, it gives them a job.
So, instead of being an integral part of learning an instrument and music generally, it's become a nightmare. People are afraid to disregard it because they might go wrong. Those who haven't fallen into that, or been persuaded by its edicts, aren't afraid to just play, discover and create. And they do.
Keeping it in the realm of the mind and the intellect introduces paranoia, you must have noticed it. When it's part of the learning process as you go there's nothing to be afraid of, it's just stuff you've absorbed. Not in the intellectual sense but in the doing of playing and everything that entails.
The word 'theory' should never have been used, it's just knowledge of your craft. And there's always more to learn.

This seems like an interesting idea. "Washing Dishes by Hand" Step By Step guide. (scientifically researched).

Standard if you've washed dishes in a restaurant kitchen. I did food work, I did retail, basically, jobs where we worked a full shift then had to stay until everything was cleaned. The result of which is very efficient ways of cleaning.
My wife learned to clean from her mom, who casually tidies up all day long.
We both think the other one is doing it wrong, but we split up the tasks and at the end of it, the house is clean.
