I was listening to a bootleg of Ben Monder with his trio at smalls in 2010 and he plays a beautiful tune in A Major with a nice, slow groove to it. Right before the audio cuts out you hear him say “Thanks, that was another Jimmy Webb tune”. I am, perhaps ashamed to admit, not the most familiar with Webb’s work and wonder if anyone on this forum would be able to help me out. The file itself is too big to attach but I’ll provide the link to the website where I downloaded the bootleg. I believe it is track 6.

In case it needs to be said to the forum population. Don’t go downloading zip files from any old website without an antivirus to scan it.

Especially when this link is OPs only contribution to the forum.

I have heard him play a couple of Jimmy Webb tunes....

Webb's tunes often have chord changes that are simple yet unique. I've been playing Galveston lately, I like what Monder does on its bridge section.

Monder--In his interviews he speaks slowly..seems to think of what he is going to say leaving space between thoughts.

He does the same with his playing..always accurate and precise. But under the apparent gentle thought out musical approach is raw untamed ability
that the Hendrix lineage may envy as he plays at the end of his arrangement of Galveston.

Yeah, he goes full fuzz mode on Goldfinger. Same album, quite a few pop tunes on it, really nice cover of a Dylan tune.

I don't do Windows, so I ain't skeered of shady files, but the link in the OP doesn't work. It goes to a list of songs, but none are actually available, so I can't even guess at a title.

There are a few videos of jazz guitarists on that website - Scofield, Muthspiel, Kreisberg - but nothing by Ben Monder.

I saw that page but didn't explore it enough. Well done, I'm impressed :-)

That’s cool, I didn’t realise you could still listen to the Smalls archive like that (I remember you could years ago, but I thought they changed it at some point).

Anyway the Jimmy Webb tune Mick noted starts at 38:20.

The Ben Monder Trio - SmallsLIVE

Ben also plays Up Up and Away (also by Jimmy Webb) as the second tune of the set.

Incidentally I saw Ben here in the UK not so long ago and he told me he doesn’t play those ‘stretchy’ chords quite so much now, as they are starting to make his hands hurt!

Where are you getting the track listing? I couldn't find that either.

I don’t think there is a track list, I just hunted around in the audio for the starts/ends of the tunes until I found it.

I understand that but how did both you and Mick know what the song was called? Even the Smalls entry just had the tracks numbered without names.

Because Ben announced it (either before or after playing it, can’t remember which now).

Some of the Smalls archive gigs are videos, I didn’t realise that. Maybe it’s the more recent ones.

Okay, got it, the announcement came after the track, not before it. I never made it that far! But thanks, all solved now.

Yes, some of the entries are videos. Quite interesting. And there are a lot of guitarists I'd never heard of too.

Yes, he named the tune (If These Walls Could Speak) after playing it.... Never heard it before, I like Glenn Campbell's recording of it, his renditions are often the gold standard for Jimmy Webb tunes.
