I can’t limit this to any genre, I can’t limit it to players who are still alive and I certainly can’t limit it to one. My appreciation is deep and runs all over almost everything.

Yep, too hard a task! Top 10 is even too hard.

Really, though, for the sake of this exercise, I'd have to say Sco. I've seen him live many times, have all his albums, etc.; boundless creativity, great compositions, and always a sense that he's "going for it" rather than being "safe," like I hear from a lot of other -- even great -- musicians. You think he's at the top, and then he takes it to ...

Can't do it, but it makes me think about and appreciate those who can cross style barriers with authority, or at least play convincing acoustic, bop, modern, fusion, folk, brazilian, etc - 2 or more styles effectively, so that makes me think of Metheny, Kreisberg, Frisell, Sco, Lage,Vic Juris, Henderson, Stryker, Leo Amuedo (+++), Rodney Jones, Eric Johnson, Tommy Emmanuel, Frank Vignola, Chico Pinheiro, Lionel Loueke....

But, then that leaves out some of my favorite players who tend not to stray from their chosen style: Bernstein, Van Ruller, Govan, Robben Ford, Bireli, Wayne Krantz, Towner, Szymon Mika, the great John Stowell, Chris Cain, Doug Raney, Bobby Broom...

I give up. Too many genius players in the world. But, I do admire authentic versatility.

I don't know about you guys, but there seems to be more great guitarists in the world than there was when I was starting out. Maybe it's the internet access?

I'm quite partial to Toninho Horta. He is music.

Unique guitar stylist on both electric and 'viola', sublime singer-songwriter, selfless accompanist, master of melody and rhythm, etc., etc.

There are many great talents out there today, and all due props, but Toninho is like coming home for me....

Seen him many times from back in the day with Dick Morrisey to more recent gigs. Still cant get over that thumb technique of his (he said it comes from being left-handed but having no LH guitars around when he was a lad so doing the best he could on a RH guitar) but he certainly never fails to deliver.

Probably Julian Lage or Antoine Boyer at the moment but it changes regularly.

That would be my answer depending on one's view of the question: If the POV was; what living guitarist do you listen to the most that has made a recording or done a show, in the last 5 years. It would be Lagrene.

(thus, someone like Kenny Burrell (or Philip Catherine?) wouldn't meet this more narrow criteria).

Not possible. It can vary by style ('jazz' is too broad) which years, which recordings, and what mood you're in. But it's fun to listen to players thrown out there by everyone else.
