he's alive but I don't know what the deal is w Kenny Burrell and Dick Garcia has been off the scene for so long don't even know if he's still alive or the 'ghost' as he's been referenced, so I'll go w/ Joe Cohn

Hard to say!
You know what, I went to see Jim Mullen and Peter Bernstein almost a year ago - and Pete is probably my favourite living straight up jazz guitar player - and came away thinking 'good god y'all Jim Mullen is fantastic.' I'd taken Jim a bit for granted, everyone knows he's great but it's only when you see him in that sort of context... it reminds you.
So I think I know who it is and then I'm reminded other amazing players exist. It's a tough ole life, but somehow I'll stick it out ;-)

Kenny Burrell is either ill, or a victim of ongoing elder abuse. His private nature might be feeding into rumors of the later. There were some speculative articles a year or two ago.

If I could say my favorite to see live it would be Ben Monder. I used to go see him at Bar Next Door, which I guess was just understood to be a standards place. So he’d play trio and play like ….. Days of Wine and Roses and stuff … and just go bananas. It was pretty unreal.

John McLaughlin.
Because I listen to this every day and its otherworldly sublime swagger is like a hit of ecstasy or something. Just exquisite, empyreal playing right there. And of course this is but one facet of his immortal genius...
I was also transcribing it but I got stuck on one bit...
edit - and I think we know who wins the prize for greatest simultaneous (double-tracked) guitar solos of all time! -

Michael Angelo Batio

Bobby Broom

Bobby's a dang treasure.

I read down the thread and I'm: "Yeah... he's my fave." Then I read the next post and I'm: "Yeah... I agree with that one!"
Almost every player mentioned is my favourite. I'll add one though: Miles Okazaki. Love that monumental Monk undertaking and all his 'modern' stuff too. He has a certain frankness to his playing. He's a bit of a nut and I appreciate that.

Since we're mentioning guitarists, a couple that haven't been mentioned, but should, are Howard Alden and Andy Brown. They've played together many times, and well.
-
Frank Vignola.
Frank has an incredible repertoire, he can play anything, with anyone, and he is doing it every Wednesday night at Birdland. He is working overtime to keep the jazz guitar tradition alive through teaching and performing. Beyond that, he is generous with his time and his talents.

Timo Kämärainen.
-
It's really Frisell, but I'm going to say Ralph Towner just because I don't think he's been mentioned yet.
-
...and, don't forget, Ralph is a super pianist as well.

John Scofield, Julian Lage
