Having listened to his duo performance with Jonas Helleborg, I would say MM's doing a lot of improvising. I thought he played well. He was listening and responding. His rhythm feel is not a lot like Wes Montgomery, more like Bill Evans. Does anyone doubt that Bill Evans played jazz- even though he did not have that driving rhythmic swing that Wes Montgomery had? But also MM showed modern influences like Allan Holdsworth and maybe some John Abercrombie on the ballad.
Before this thread, I had known of Matteo's name and had watched parts of a few videos that didn't grab me. In all honesty, I had kind of dismissed him as another bedroom YouTube wunderkind. This performance, however, really laid out his talent in plain sight. I'm glad it was posted.
