I saw the other study group thread and wondered if anyone is interested in working on tunes from the Omnibook this summer. I have picked out 5 tunes (KC Blues, Cheryl, Blues for Alice, Anthropology, and Moose the Mooch) to work on.

I figure we could discuss analysis, fingerings, and favourite licks in this thread. Eventually we could even post videos of ourselves playing the solos (if you are confident enough to do so).

Obviously the goal here isn't to be able to play these up to the ridiculous speeds the recordings are at (although its not a bad long term goal), but more so just to gain vocabulary in the bop idiom from the truest of masters

also - if anyone has better suggestions for tunes please let me know! I only choose these because I wanted some 12-bar blues, rhythm changes, and Bird blues experience, as blues and rhythm changes are the basis for TONS of tunes. Not to mention the blues is good for any genre crossing work, and the rhythm changes and Bird blues contain tons of short ii-V licks.

I would love to, but I'm tapped out at the moment. Just don't have the time!

    Can we do Confirmation?

Im willing to do that. Im not sure Id want to do more than 6 tunes though - Id like to run this from May-August. 6 tunes in 4 months should be almost a perfect amount.

Ok well I'll do it; I've been meaning to start working through the book. I already know a bunch of heads.

So I'm thinking of getting this underway on the 22nd. I have my final classical guitar jury that day and will be pretty busy tightening up the old Magic Flute Variations until then.
Until then, we'll wait and see if a few more people join up but for now the tunes are set. If we finish those tunes and their study before the time is up we can always choose a few more (I wouldn't mind looking at Blues (fast), Scrapple from the Apple, Donna Lee or Ornithology).
I've never ran a study group before but I am very interested and optimistic about this even if its just the current 3 people. Im not 100% sure what to do besides transcribe (only using the Omnibook for tough passages), memorize, analyze, and then try and improvise over the given changes using some of my/our/your own licks over the chord progression.

On a side note - does anyone know any really diatonic Parker tunes? Id love to look at something super diatonic like Autumn Leaves...

Jeff you should hop on board there should be ample time to learn the tunes and you seem experienced in the jazz idiom.

I checked out your youtube channel - you're a decent classical guitarist too! Your right hand improved over the few videos I watched quite a bit. Don't take this the wrong way but your RH attack still a little heavy handed. This is a good thing for a classical player, but fluidity and grace is always paramount in that style. You should check out the 120 Giuliani RH arpeggios. Practice them ultra slow. They improved my right hand ten-fold (thats not even a remote exaggeration either). Also - I should mention you have quite good LH technique. A very straight wrist and you pivot at the shoulder well instead of compensating with the wrist and elbow. Keep playing classical guitar too! It will only improve your overall technique.

Think we could start this in the beginning of next month? like the 5th or so? I think my last final is on the fourth. I should be done with my jazz jury too. Or I could jump in late

    I'm in. Sounds great.
Will K.C. Blues will be the first tune? I need to get started to keep up. I'm learning Confirmation right now and its slow going but great. The fingerings are very challenging and would love to learn how others approach these solos. Great reading practice too.

I was hoping to do KC first because its one of the easier solos and its a blues (minus that one crazy b9 lick). We could change it around of everyone wants to?

We will be starting our work on Sunday, May 6th with KC Blues. I figured it'd be good for us all to start on the same blank page.

I really wouldn't like to spend more than two weeks per tune (maybe three if we are all having problems) because the goal is to get through this stuff. Even if one learns the head and changes it will be a lot to work with.

Im thinking we all come here weekly to post performance videos, questions on fingering, theory questions, discuss the harmony and theory behind it, and share our favourite lines. I personally will be keeping a journal of my progress and a "lick-tionary" of cool licks. I would recommend everyone else do the same.

This study group does present some challenges compared to other groups who are studying method books, so it will be challenging.

Hmmm. I'm done with school Saturday May 5. :-0

All I gotta do is learn the heads, and the chord progressions? What else are you guys doing? I'm not so big into transcribing Bird right now; I'm on a Miles kick. I do have the Omnibook buried in a pile somewhere, but I admit, I never much made use of it.

Well, the plan is to do the heads, changes, and solos from the book. Its really more of a vocabulary gaining group. Learning the solo's up to speed is one thing but learning his vocab is what Im really after. Also its great sight-reading practice if you don't want to transcribe completely by ear...

I forget the content of the Omibook. Is it heads only, or are his solos in there as well? I've kind of got my own way of transcribing solos and it's not out of a book, it involves me transcribing the solos directly from the recordings after I've learned to sing them verbatim.

heads and slow.... I also do the same thing. Basically the Omnibook is there for a reference. Those who want to use it solely are more than welcome but I will be using the recordings and transcribing by ear. Referencing licks/phrases and chords is a lot easier with the book though. Plus is gives us all something concrete to go off.

I might transcribe some by ear, or use it as an etude. Both are important. my approach through this book will depend on the song I guess.

Fat Jeff, this book has melody, chords and solos in it. Also What are you studying in college?

I just ordered my copy of the omnibook and hope to join in to the best of my abilities. I don't think I'll be able to offer much in the way of insights but hopefully that is not a prerequisite for following along!
