Interesting that that chord chart had the main chords starting with the minor with the major secondary. Nearly all the famous players do it major. Getz, I think, did minor but he's definitely in the minority (I checked them all out on Spotify).

Changing one chord, the I chord, from a Major7 to min#7 in the first measure is not "doing it in minor." That's simply a harmonic voice-leading line from the Gm (6th-b7th-#7th) to the Fm6/9 (9th) - Bb7 (7th), which, as you said, is practically irrelevant if you're only playing the melody.

    P.S. - Actually, in that chart, they've got the moving line in the bass: Gm/G > Gm/F# > Fm6/F > Bb7/E > Ebmaj7.

I mentioned the voice-leading lines in this tune when we played it in our chord melody study group:

And, I laughed at the thought that it might turn out this way. Maybe, I should have saved those leftover dreams, where is that worn out wish that I threw aside.

Since you asked, I saw it on the GoodWill auction site the other day - no bids on it yet though, too many other competing worn out wishes there.

No reason to wait on playing it. You can learn it, play it, play with it, learn the chords, and listen to other performances of it generally over the same period of time. Don't let the words or vocal performance confine you. Pianists and guitarists have a huge advantage over horn players, namely, we are not confined by how long we can hold a breath. People talk like "natural" breathing is always good, but what we often like about bebop players is their endless lines of amazing phrasing. So do it all let your playing become plastic and malleable. Life is too short to delay getting to the instrument because of some set of artificial rules.

I kinda like what I already have there. But I guess having just turned 70, I'm aware of how short life is and important it is to play the songs, not just plan out how I'm going to play the songs.

Tune of the moment is still Just Squeeze me but the melody is super simple so I’ve been going through some old tunes too.

This one is a forever favorite but also keeps falling off my list:

Good lord, I actually recognised the song from what you were playing. You must be doing something right -

Nice job on the melody too. You just need the fast part now. 1:06 on this.

Getting some sweet tone from that tele....I see you wrap your thumb over the neck too. So do I. I want to break that habit!

Not really a habit that needs breaking so long as you aren’t bending your wrist funny to make it happen. Some people have hands that shape and it’s fine. Other people don’t and it’s bad for their wrists. If it’s fine for you then it’s probably fine

That tele sounds good to me. It sounds like you're going pretty much straight into the amp. Nice tone.

Joining the party a little late. Here’s Afternoon in Paris, a tune that for some reason gives me the yips. Good reason to practice it.

Here's a version of Rainy Day with vocal I posted some time ago. It does have the melody, but not just the melody. But it's more in the spirit of all the other recorded versions of the tune, rather than a post aligning with the original spirit of the thread.

The playing is very good and confident.
For me the sound seems to have too much treble... but that's also a matter of snglecoile.
There are guitarists who love this Tele sound.
Now about the thumb of the left hand....gv noticed this.
When I went to music school, the teacher always told me - hide the thumb of your left hand.
This is what happened when I learned to play a classical guitar with a very wide neck.
In the case of guitars with a narrow neck, it's a bit different.
The most important thing is that the hand is loose and not tense.
Nevertheless, I try to hide the thumb of my left hand... at least I try.

The idea is very simple, just play the melody to a tune. Single notes only. Phrase it your way. The big stipulation? Honor system time-- you need to play the melody for a half hour before you can record.

And hopefully then take a break and play it for another half hour.

Why? The 'zations. Memorization, internalization, personalization. And anything else you think it could be good for. I play by myself so much these days that I realize I very rarely just play a tune without putting in chords and stuff to flesh it out. So this, for me, is a personal challenge-- learn and internalize a bunch of melodies to tunes i "should" know.
The original half hour idea is good, it seems to improve melody retention.

    Great performance!

But 'I get misty just holding your hand' - that's poetry that is!

Definitive refutation of the old claim that jazz players don't use vibrato! You got one really delicious bend into a melody note in there. It's enough to make a guy use lighter strings.
