There are many standard approaches for playing any tune in different jazz styles melodically and harmonically.
What generally gets muddy is when there is no organization for use of changes and extensions.
Like mixing old school b9s and b13s and Dim. expansions with modal II V from Dorian and Altered from MM. and Blue Notes.
Just b13s helps clean up the mud. I'm just referencing the Dom Chords and their related Chord Patterns
