which non-"jazz" tunes woulkd you like to play/arrange and use as improvisational vehicles? I mean pop, rock, hip-hop, ect? Melhdau did his whole Soundgarden and Radiohead stuff, and recently Metheny has been doing pop interpretations.
I would love to do a Bjork catalog, because her tunes are way hip and very intricate. I would also like to do some Jackson 5, Marvin Gay and AL Green.
"Venus as a Boy" would be the first I'd tackle. I don't know why anyone hasn't done a chord-solo arrangement of it yet

Free Bird.
Just so when that stupid smug bastard in the crowd calls for it, I can give him- and the entire crowd- a 20 minute long version of Free Bird and watch him get the crap beat out of him.

amy has quite a few tunes that would be good to cover, especially from her first album "Frank"

check out her rendition of "Moodie's mood for love" wow.
Not many current jazz singers that are close to Amy.

just listened to that.
she is so good.

Too bad she can't lay off the heroin & horse tranquilizer cocktails.

There are several beatles tunes that work well. I'm checking out some Tom Waits tunes as well.

GodinFan: would you include the werewolf singing? =P

Many years ago, I had an album by guitarist Louis Stewart, where he did a brilliant Jazz interpretation of Faure's Pavanne.
I'd love to find that album again. Does anyone here know of it?

I'm working on an adaptation of Cochise by Audioslave.
-
"As Tears Go By" by the Stones works well
-
A lot of Western Swing stuff would be pretty close anyways. I played in a country band one time that did a kind of jazzed up version of "Time Changes Everything," by Bob Wills.

A horse vet told me that horse tranquilizers would kill any person.

jazzyteach65, thanks for the above video. that was an awful choice for a 'jazz' tune, but what the heck—it's kenny burrell!Last edited by patskywriter; 09-21-2010 at 06:30 PM.
