Tangerine was written in 1941 by Johnny Mercer. Cole Porter wrote I Love You in 1944. Mercer for the win.
Edit/correction: "Tangerine" is a popular song. The music was written by Victor Schertzinger, the lyrics by Johnny Mercer.[1] The song was published in 1941 and soon became a jazz standard.Last edited by Mark Kleinhaut; 01-02-2026 at 04:20 PM.

The music for "Tangerine" was composed by Victor Schertzinger, while the lyrics were penned by Johnny Mercer.
Schetzinger was a film director, and his final film was The Fleet is In. He wrote Tangerine and I'll Remember You for the film.

. Thanks for catching that. Correction noted in original post.

I was just starting to take guitar lessons and one of the song-per-week I was assigned to learn was I Remember You. I looked up what film the song was introduced in and ended up watching The Fleet's In.

He passed only months after the film was released in 1941. Thus, I admit I have a passion to bringing attention to him.

Tangerine, She is all they claim/ With her eyes of night and lips as bright as flame/ Tangerine,/ When she dances by/ Senoritas stare and caballeros sigh, And I've seen/ Toasts to Tangerine/ Raised in every bar across the Argentine
Alt lyrics from 'The Fleets In':
And I've seen times when Tangerine / Had the bourgeoisie believing she were queen
Yes, she has them all on the run/ But her heart belongs to just one/ Her heart belongs to Tangerine/

Thanks man, I’m doing all I can, all things considered, but I just love playing.
