Here's Dave Kelbie playing rhythm behind Don Vappie, a master banjoist.

The rhythm part in the verses sounds like a samba. It's the last 16th note of a beat (the 'uh' in 1-ee-and-uh) and the downbeat that follows immediately after (the '2' in 2-ee-and-uh). The rhythm part in the chorus is more tresillo based.

But the thing that surprises me is how much the guitar sounds like a ganza playing a chocalho rhythm part in a samba during the verses. The combination of the rhythmic pattern and the timbre of the instrument creates this amazing, amazing texture that supports the entire band so well.

    listen to the whole thing!

Right? The whole album is just as fun and good. I like how there aren't any pianists and drummers in the tunes. It gives the rhythm guitarist so much room to shine rhythmically and texturally. Album made me realise how great guitar can be as supportive and 'unobstructive' backing instrument for a soloist. Really dig guitar and banjo combos, too.

Very cool feel. Yes it is quite samba-ish. Slight chorinho vibes.

I’ll have to listen to this record to hear what’s possible on the old tenor. It’s cool that it’s taking more of a melodic role.

As for the players, it was nice to see David Horniblow’s name (best nominative determinism ever). I didn’t know he’d played with Vappie. I’ve played a few with him over the years, cool guy.

Dave Kelbie I don’t know, but friends play with him quite a bit. I know him on record. A lot of the Django ala Creole stuff with Evan Christopher has a similar sort vibe, with a more varied rhythmic repertoire than is typical for the straight-ahead swing stuff.

The Daves did a Jelly Roll Morton project that’s worth checking out.

Very similar, but it sounds a 16th off from the way I usually hear that comping pattern.
