I work on a lot of exercises where I place the metronome on the ONE of every measure, every two measures, and every four measures. Hearing the downbeat of the measure helps me hear how everything else lines up in a musical phrase.

Since I am using clicks that are 30 bpm to lower than 10 bpm, I've used Youtube to get the correct sped. I would rather have a physical metronome again so I don't get distracted by ads and social media in general.

I still have my old Sieko, but that doesn't click slow enough.

Any ideas? I would put my metronome query in the gear section, but I wasn't sure if it would be seen down there.

The friendly AI Gods came up with this:

Yes, several online metronomes and mobile apps support speeds below 30 BPM, which is useful for extreme slow-tempo practice or Larghissimo

Sorry, I re-read your post, and you don't want online versions.

    Good luck!

I've seen some comments that the Planet waves metronome goes down to at least 20 bpm.

I’ve got the Time Guru metronome app on my ipad, which appears to go down to 5 bpm.

It has options to randomly leave beats out, which is interesting to try.

Ben Monder said in an interview that he sometimes starts at 10 bpm. Considering some of his work this may be a necessary move.

When I study some rhythmic lines of sax or piano I have to go as slow as possible to construct the ideas.

    Easy..sometimes isn't so easy.

I got an iPhone recently and downloaded DrumGenuis.

    Very cool stuff.

But yeah, I am trying to find a physical metronome that does the trick.

I tend to get really distracted by computers and such, that's why I was so reluctant to get an iPhone

Maybe that Planet Waves does the trick.

The Boss DB-30 & DB-90 (Dr. Beat) metronomes have fixed tempo settings as low as 30bpm, however, you can program them to accent every 2nd or 4th beat which effectively gives you tempos as low as 7.5 bpm (at 30 bpm) or 10 bpm (at 40bpm). There may other digital metronomes that can also do this.

Might get the db-30. Good idea!

Still researching, but that might be a contender.

Hard to find physical metronomes that go below 30 bpm. I would think that digital metronomes could achieve that easily, if programmed as such from the factory.

I really like putting the metronome click on the downbeat of the measure, every two measures, or every four measures. Helps to hear the timespan of the phrase. Especially with the poly rhythm in The Jimmy Raney Book, hearing where the downbeat lands helps me line up all the odd groupings. Hearing the downbeat also helps when I am learning when I am learning the basic harmonic rhythm of a tune.

Amazon has the db-30 new. I'll see who else has the metronome.

A lot of these iPhone apps have ads and promotions. Nothing is free

I have some long mp3's that Bruce Arnold recorded for downbeat, 2 measure, and 4 measure clicks.

Might have to go back to those. Maybe playing them from my iPod would be less distracting--it's the old one without internet connectivity.

Not sure if the DB 30 mutes the other beats of the measure to just click on the ONE. Youtube reviews were vague.

If anyone else finds a physical metronome that can click as slow as 10 bpm, let me know. Even 20-30 bpm ain't bad.

Second Doctor beat … they’re expensive but they do most of the stuff the regular metronomes don’t do.

Ive never seen a regular mechanical or even handheld digital one that goes lower than forty.

I use Soundbrenner on my phone but also I’m with you and prefer a physical one for practicing so I can put my phone in the next room.

I just deleted the Soundbrenner 10 minutes after the download. Too many notifications to register for monthly or annual whatever. DrumGenius was worth the one time purchase. Playing monthly for a freaking metronome?!?

The DB 30 would be great if I could mute beats. The other models get QUITE expensive. Plus, I don't want a metronome to do all the subdivisions for me. Very cool feature, but what I really want is a physical metronome that can click at like 5-220 bpm. The higher bpm's I usually just get by clicking on the ONE anyway. A sloooooowww metronome, even digital, would be amazing.

Anyone want to build one for me?

I use this Metronome Beats - Apps on Google Play

    No ads.

You can go all the way down to 1bpm.

Personally I use it this way:

    1. I think of target tempo, say 170bpm, and set nome at 85bpm. (I do this because I feel jazz in half time, and it also helps with process below.)

This app allows you to turn off clicks.

    2. Leave clicks 1, 2, 3, 4 on = 2 bars of 170bpm, so you hear beats 1 and 3 of each bar. Someone else near you who's not practising will hear the click and perceive it as 85bpm.

    3. Turn off clicks 2 and 4 = 2 bars of 170bpm, so you hear beat 1 of each bar. Again, another person will hear this as 42.5bpm.

    4. Turn of clicks 2, 3, and 4 = still 2 bars of 170bpm, but you are hearing beat 1 every 2 bars. The other person will perceive this as 21.25bpm.

    5. There's a 50% speed reduction at the bottom of the screen. Activate that and you're hearing beat 1 every 4 bars. The other person perceives this as 10.625bpm.

I do it this way so that I don't have to math everything out. It's just turning clicks off and pressing 50% at the end.

All great ideas. I just wanted to remove as many iPhone and Laptop distractions as possible. Never shoulda gotten a smartphone, but the GPS was so tempting!

@pamosmusic, what type of Dr. Beat do you recommend?

Slowest I have yet found is BPM 2 - 999 (two BPM!!)
It is PolyNome - only runs on iOS devices. Over 100

    two e and a"), many features https://polynome.net

I was told it can click on just the 1st beat or 1st and 3rd, etc., but I don't have one so can't personally confirm this.

If the aforementioned is true, then you could of course go as low as 8 bpm with 32 bpm clicking only on beat 1.

I have an old Korg DTM-12 digital metronome that I have not used for quite a while, it takes batteries but I want to order a power plug for it. The manual says its lowest setting is 40bpm but it can be set for as many as 9 beats per measure, but only sound one of the beats. I presume this means that setting it at, say, 40bpm and 8 beats per measure would mean you'd only hear the beats sound at 5 bpm (i.e., 40bpm divided by 8 beats per measure) but I cannot confirm that at this time.

This implies that the Korg TM-70 (and the TM-50) metronome can subdivide the beats as I suggested:

    Mine goes down to 1
Ultra Max Turbo Metronome Plus 2000

Hm. But it needs a reload when wanting to stop it when it is in the middle of a cycle... have to add a kill switch there too.

Edit: nah. kinda cannot do the kill-switch. The whole measure gets buffered for stability reasons and the buffer is untouchable once populated (the browser handles it, not the script anymore).
Instead, you can remove ticks from 1st track, so you only leave 1, that means when wanting to stop, you have to only wait for this one 10bpm tick to end.. to stop and start again.
You can add whatever amount of ticks on the 2...n tracks - the bpm is calculated from the 1st track only.

I still like the analogue metronomes by Wittner, one of the oldest manufacturers worldwide. Their products are simply the best you can get.

Thanks for recommending physical metronomes. After watching several reviews of the KDM-3, I couldn't find anything about muting the beats of a measure. The DB-90 might be the only metronome that does that--and it's over $100. Might have to wait till my 40th birthday for a purchase like that...

Be great to find a cheaper physical metronome, if anyone knows. One that can mute out beats (ONE audible, 2-3-4 silent).

Reviews suggest you can mute beats in the Boss DB-30 or decrease the volume of the off beats so that they are barely audible and the accented beat stands out. Or you could subdivide the beat yourself, e.g., count every other beat at 30bpm to give you 15bpm, etc. I would email Boss and ask them -- BOSS Dr. Beat Portable Metronome (DB-30) - Amazon.com

Actually, starting at about 17 min. into this video, he demonstrates subdividing the beat as I just suggested with the Boss DB-33.

I use an iPhone app called MetroTimer (by ONYX apps) that is free and doesn't have any ads or annoying "register now" popups.

It goes down to 30, but you can tell it which beats you want to click (also, accents). It can do whatever time signature you want which you can save them as presets, and it has a tap control in order to figure out the tempo of things.
