Lesson - The Pat Martino Riff, you *HAVE* to know over Amin7! Seven Steps to Pat Martino, Part 5

This is the prototypical Pat Martino line. I'm a student of Pat's and I can help you unlock the secrets to his technique and approach to improvisation.

This is the prototypical Martino riff, over Am7, based on the Dorian mode but interjecting chromatics between the 9th and the root and the 4th and the minor 3rd.

I hope you find this useful. If so, please like and subscribe.

Aha!! So that's what that is. For... um... over 50 years anyway, I've often told myself I should sit down and figure out what Pat's doing but I always got distracted by some other thing. Back when, it would've meant the death of an LP by dropping the needle in over&over&over. I did that a bit and kinda left it at 'he's doing something chromatic. cool... I can do chromatic!'

Thanks for unravelling that Jack. I really like your little bite-sized lessons. This is actually the first time I've learned anything from a youtube with a guitar in my lap. A lot of what I've seen on there is just too dense and fast moving for me. I like your pace, and I like that I can grasp a nice little chunk right away. Sure does beat the hell out of the old way!

I have subscribed and will be learning more about Mr Martino's music. Finally...

I love that you have direct lineage and that you're passing his teachings along so nicely. Don't let a couple of idjit tuber comments get you down!!

    Sincerely,
    chas.

This is great stuff, Jack. I like the way you take your time, make things clear, and stay on track.

Nicely done Jack! I studied with Harry Leahey in NJ, who studied with Dennis Sandole in Philadelphia, as did Pat.

Harry was always after me to study Pat, and I remember some of these concepts- rather vaguely I'm afraid, so it was good to see them in nice bite size pieces that are equally as good fro practicing technique.

    Keep up the good work!

How can you be so prolific? You’re killing it, well done.
