He started playing at 55 Christopher (about 15 blocks north) a few years later. Until he started playing there, it wasn't a music club. It was just a bar, a fairly creepy dive, truth be told.
I lived in NYC from 1979-1986. I thought that I was going to 55 Christoper most of those years, but I could be wrong. I went to a lot of clubs around that time. It was great fun to be young in NYC.

I'm quite sure about this.. I grew up in the Village and am a lifetime Manhattan-ite, and spent a lot of time in both spots.

I enjoyed it also. Some food for thought!

I enjoyed Stern's comment about his drug use at the time and that " you knew you had a drug problem if Miles was trying to get you into rehab "

I am sure that you are correct then. Maybe I started going there towards the end on my time in NYC. There was another place on Bleeker that had a guy named Kenny Gwinn that played there on weekends. A rocker but highly entertaining. Can't remember the name of that place. Do you know?

I just saw this last night. Wow. Great documentary which highlighted his incredible talent and troubles.

It was one of the better music docs I've seen recently, though it sorta sped through his troubles in the 80's. It focused on technique and gear more than most music docs.

I found it interesting that his bipolar disorder did not manifest itself much until 1981 or so. This hit close to home for me, as I have experience with family members with bipolar disorder. It is a terrible illness, and I'm not surprised at all by what happened.

I also felt it perhaps unfairly slanted Zawinul--hard to tell, since we don't hear his side of the later conflicts. Certainly Peter Erskine thought Zawinul dissed Jaco unnecessarily, but there was a mentorship and mutual competition that brought out some wonderful work. Other references say Jaco left WR on good terms.

Anyway, a good way to spend 2 hours.
