I really enjoyed the guitar trio with McLaughlin, DiMeola and DeLucia. The first 2 guys were certainly very successful and well-known in the states, and also have, um, healthy egos...I think they have been able to work well with other people whom they recognize as on their level of virtuosity.
The same with Chick and Herbie. And Chick and Gary Burton.
Maybe this is not correct, but I always see the bop and prebop players as more collaborative. I think the 60's kind of exploded the idea of the instrumental soloist as a demigod and made it harder for the soloists and bandleaders to keep their ego in check.
The ones that have been very successful as collaborators and mentors often have a strong spiritual interest, like McLaughlin and Corea, or just seem to see teaching as a goal as important as making music--Gary Burton, Wynton Marsalis among others.
