Yeah, it's jazz. Really, you have to ask?

I've had a few, so I apologize for the tone of my post, but the whole "advancing the music" thing is bullshit. You know never claimed to be advancing the music? The cats that actually did.

    Jazz isn't a what, it's a how.

    Sure 'bout that?

The album cover for Miles Davis' In A Silent Way said "Directions in Music" on it. That was pretty darned explicit.

I struck the first note at the first jazz convocation for western mich. univ. back in the 70's. the tune was "the dance of maya". we had a violin prof(gerald fischback) playing the goodman stuff. in 20/8 time. both Walden, and Knapp(2nd mahavish) were from this town(kalamazoo) original home of gibson guitars.

on another note. Pat Metheny has the best hair of any jazz guitarist, not J.M. as mentioned. I was leaning towards Joe P. as I am bald, but then realized that I was imparshal. During the early 70's. J.M. had the best hair hands down..

I was fortunate to see MO twice with the original lineup. Live, they were unbelievable. Cobham drove that band like no drummer I've seen since then. He and McLaughlin seemed to have a telepathic connection that had to be seen to believe. As I understand there are bad feelings regarding songwriting royalties that will probably prevent any reunion of the original lineup.

Neither McLaughlin or Cobham play anything like they do now as they did in the early 70's. A reunion would be a disaster. The members know that - I spoke to Cobham 15 years ago and he said as much. They are part of history. Best let it lie and listen to the great recordings (at Wolfgang's Vaults) that are available.
