Cool to see. I felt a little embarrassed for Jim though. "Hey, wow the TV audience in eight bars, hotshot!"

I liked Merv's playing better than his awkward whoops of approval. Kudos for giving JH a little limelight though.

Merv and Carson were both musically talented. Where you gonna see Frisell or Rosenwinkel or Malone on a late night talk show these days? Maybe maybe on Jimmy Fallon...but I doubt it.

Wow that was awesome! Making me gas for a early 50's 175.

Flat: Rosenwinkel was on jimmy fallon once, not talking or anything, but playing with the roots, he went to the same high school as questlove and a few others.

    Wonderful, thanks for posting.

Brings back memories of being in grade school, watching variety shows (Merv, Dean, Ed, Johnny) and always looking for the guitar player . . . I never understood why they typically weren't playing a Fender, I don't question that anymore.

Ha, yeah. I caught that Fallon show one night by rare chance (as in I rarely seem to watch it). OMG. There's Kurt... jest sittin' in...

What was his guitar back then? Is that a single P-90 175? Sorry if this is common knowledge.

I suspect that may be the 1950s ES-175 that Jim bought from Howard Roberts. From another corner of this fine site:

(Thanks for the Fallon guest info, guys. I'll have to look for those on a re-run sometime.)

Re-watched this and cant get over his tone. You can especially hear it during his solo, anyone care to share how hes getting that? Is he playing through his Gibson GA-50?

Same tone as all his recordings in the 50's/60's.

That's the sound of P90's on a laminate archtop through a tube amp.

It's my personal favourite tone; listen to his Desmond stuff.

Love it. He is a giant at understated tone and harmony. You can learn so much from just transcribing one chorus of anything he's done. Hope he lives forever.
