Wow, this is like a BF love-fest -- which I think is great. I love the guy's virtuosity, range of styles and ability to constantly bring something new to the table.

Bill's playing is always so fresh and full of surprises. ALWAYS! But yes, those days of the SG, the DeArmond pedal he lovingly packed in its original box every night, the amazing quartet with Joey, Kermit and Hank, his NY days-duos with Tim Berne... That was truly an extraordinary time. Much to Bill's credit, when something else rang true to his sensibilities, he followed the call and never looked back. For me on the sidelines, yes, I miss those days.

Has anyone checked out his album with Ron Carter and Paul Motian? I just picked it up recently and it's become one of my favorite Frisell albums. It's simply titled Bill Frisell, Ron Carter, Paul Motian; check it out if you haven't already.

Oh yes, GREAT album! It's been in regular rotation since I got it. On The Street Where You Live is definitely my favorite cut on that one.
*edit* Eighty-One is a pretty good tune, too

    not to be rude but....

that's the most most overused word ever - virtuoso, virtuosity, etc.

when it's used like this it just means "i really like the player".

BF is a great artist and very creative guitarist, but by his own admission is not a virtuoso guitarist.

if he is a virtuoso of anything its the creative use of signal processing.

I've been listening to the duo with Fred Hersch again.
He has a way of defining a piece so each time I think of that piece, it's Bill's version I hear.

Anyone get the new cd w/ the Lennon songs? I just got a few days ago and am kind of undecided. Have to give it some more listening.

I didn't even know there was one. Here's a link:

Amazon.com: All We Are Saying...: Bill Frisell: Music

Listened to a couple of clips; interesting song choices. I'll need to pick it up to see how I feel about it. It seems like all the songs fit a certain genre of Lennon tune, the exception being "Please Please Me".

Gotta say there has never been a Frisell CD that comes even close to a live performance. That being said, I do really like hearing Bill's take on songs that meant so much to me. In some ways it's harder to take songs with such ionic value and make them your own. These are all Bill. All John Lennon. I can't wait to see this done live.

I love his folks songs #1. He does a Shenandoah for Johnny Smith. So simple hard so haunting.

Anyone seen All Hat? The movie with Rachel Leigh Cook? Or Finding Forrester? With Sean Connery? Bill does the soundtracks.
Check out him doing the Universal Theme Song:

The entire Finding Forrester movie owes a lot to Bill's moody guitar sound. Check it out.

There were two movies Ghost Town released in 2007-2008. Very different movies but I couldn't find any mention of Bill in either of them. That may not necessarily mean anything but it's enough to discourage me from getting the DVD to check it out. Where did you hear about this?

Bill is amazing. He is in another world.

His style is not flashy. Rather, it is droning, repetitive and embellishing.

Like Pat Metheny, he appears completely immersed in his performances and is highly expressive.

I wish Bill would use a whammy bar instead of bending the guitar neck so much.

Regardless, he's absolutely one of my favorites.

He used to play an SG. He played the body like a whammy. Hold a note and push the body and pull the neck. The whole guitar whammied.

Yes of course I love Bill Frisell. His music is unique, exciting and hard to classify. What's not to like?

I'm not saying what jazz is or not, but this is hauntingly beautiful music. Thought I'd share it. Bill and Marianne Faithfull.
