Just stumbled onto this - playing a 175 with his thumb!

I think there's more than one of him playing the ES-175 and/or an L5. I prefer him on the Tele, but it's really interesting to see an earlier phase of his development.

At 4:16, he pulls a pick from between his fingers. He then picks over the end of the fingerboard. Interesting! He obviously always loved the deepest tone he could get.
