The Howard Rees DVDS are awesome. You can’t get like “the single note sequence” unfortunately. It’s divided into sort of level one and level two and each level has what it imagines to be the complimentary stuff for fundamentals, improvisation, harmony, etc.

Still the best bet though, probably?

It’s expensive but hey … Christmas is coming up.

Yeah, I'm looking for a written summary. I get the concepts, don't need demos, just want a written summary to practice and absorb rather than slogging through videos.

That would be the accompanying book.

Honestly it has exactly what you want … 10 pages of the ABCs just laid out and probably 20 of the added note and other improvisation rules just like a) b) c) …. you’d just be paying the (admittedly high) cost for the other stuff in there that you don’t want.

    Haha I see.

Yeah. I get why they do it. The rules are kind of moot without the line building practical aspect but if you have that going on with Chris already, you’d get some utility out of just the rules.

This is obvious so you probably have already … but have you asked Chris?

I haven't. Edit: Actually this summary by the OS Pro student is looking pretty good.

    Share if you can?

I’ve been in a rut for about a week now and I’ve been feeling the Barry Harris calling me back.

Going to start with the real basics. ABCs and the rhythm exercise with the added note scales for a couple days.

Kept going with my chord stuff, and have been getting into sixths through the sixth diminished scale ... or maybe sevenths, technically? Starting with C and A, and then going up the scale from there. So I think that's technically sevenths. Whatever.

Played through the rhythm exercise in a few different positions, starting with each chord tone. Then played one-octave runs with the added note scales, starting with thirds and triads. So that was fun.

Did some super simple line-building stuff over the first four of What's New.

    Over and out.

    ^ That's good. I like 2 and 3 note voicings through 6th/dim. Helps a lot with facility.

I'm feeling the BH calling me too. I used to think ehh it's pretty good but I'd rather take approaches from different players and maybe work it some. Now I'm really liking it. It's so CP. I want to get it all down.

Yes, I can share stuff. I'm going to summarize it for myself. But I can paste the table of contents and then share sections of the text if you want.

Get the Howard Rees DVD sets

There’s also the Roni Ben Hur book ‘talk jazz’.

Of course you should. It’s the closest you’ll get to taking Barry’s class in person.

Yeah. In a vacuum, I would say yes for sure. They're really good and I've found them to be worth the money.

Only thing is if you feel like you're getting a lot out of the live stuff with Chris. My guess is if you asked him he'd tell you to get them, but ... you have access to Chris and could theoretically ask him yourself. So that might be worth doing.

I don’t know of any. Chris’ series was my first deep dive into Barry. I made notes on each video so I could review things. When Barry was doing the online classes during the pandemic, I did the same thing. Anytime I run into any video of folks showing Barry’s system, I make notes of things I haven’t seen before. I’ve even added some stuff I haven’t heard anyone cover but that seem at least somewhat common in the bop solos I hear.

I would suggest doing something similar then organizing them as you see fit (as this could be done in countless ways). I bet you would get a LOT out of doing this.

    ^ Yep, I think that's the answer.

When you get to 10 pages of notes, add some written examples and call it a book. Boom, professional musician. The pennies will roll right in.

Chords and Harmony: Alan Kingstone book (RIP); also Roni Ben Hurr: Chordability
Singe notes: Roni Ben Hurr Talk Jazz
RBH also has good MyMusic MaterClass on how to apply BH to Rhythm Changes and Minor Blues.

Yes, in addition to the Howard Rees DVD sets and Alan Kingstone's book, all of Roni Ben-Hur's material is gold.

I work a lot from his book 'Talk Jazz Guitar' (yellow cover, has suggesting fingerings for guitarists - there is also 'Talk Jazz' with a blue cover, which has the same material but presented for all instruments without fingerings).
The book is available from his website or through Jamey Aebersold.
It's a thorough workout on the single note aspects of Barry's teachings - half-note rules, arpeggios and scales - for application to tunes, see his videos on MyMusicMasterclass.

For chord work, Roni's DVD (and accompanying e-book) 'Chordability' is excellent.

Not that I can see. Best bet is probably to go straight to Roni's site. That's how I got mine.
