But that, of course, is not how to do it. This is how to do it. One day, maybe... :-)

I'm going to see Alessio Menconi next month in Brighton, should be good!

I was buried with family stuff and other music projects last week and had no time to sit down with Edelweiss or whatever the heck that was called ;-) Should be easier this time around with a tune I already know, so I'll try to get something together over the weekend.

Not just you, John, everyone seemed to be spending more time with their family that week :-)

I felt a bit for wzpzgsr...

He’s appearing with Nigel Price at the Verdict jazz club.

That's the one off Edward Street, very good little club. Probably the best locally, much better than the Dome, etc. And I think Nigel Price is a regular there. You'll enjoy it, no question

    (edit)

Just looked it up. You know there's a masterclass at 5pm before the show?

Yes, don’t think I’ll be able to make that though.

I haven’t been there before, but a friend of mine has been several times and recommended it.

All right, breaking the ice. It's been nonstop well-behaved archtop jazz for me for the past couple of weeks out in the real world. Something needed to be done about that ...

I just updated my studio setup with ASIO4ALL, and I think I have the latency issue under control now. My computer's not the problem. With a bit more tweaking, it should be fine. I figured I'd join the virtual jam with Stolen Moments for my first 4 part track with the new setup - it's not perfect, but it's light years ahead of what I could do using WASAPI. This is all me on piano, bass, rhythm guitar, and lead. The bass is real (‘57 P-bass) as is the guitar (Raines Tele 7 with Lace Alumitone HBs). The piano is the DSK Bosendorfer sample played on an Alesis Q88 Mk 2. As this was the first multitracked recording I made with the ASIO drivers and Tracktion as my DAW, I didn’t apply any processing.

Very cool, John! Still well behaved and well played, but with an edge. How’d you record that - straight in with plugins? mic’ed amp with effects? Other? The OD is really smooth - what is it?

Sounds great! Welcome aboard. We need some fresh meat in these weekly jams. I was starting to think after last week that we were done.

Thanks! I recall reading a post in one of these virtual jam threads that suggested not making your own backing tracks. I apologize if doing so was a faux pas, but I wanted to see if and how Tracktion and ASIO4ALL improved my multitracking.

Whoever suggested ASIO to me in another thread (I don’t remember who it was) was right on the money. I haven’t yet added any latency correction at all, and the track synch is pretty good out of the box. I think the slight audible lag in the MIDI keyboard is in the keyboard itself, not the recording system. But I can probably dial it out in Tracktion and will try next week. I’m used to anticipating the beat from using a Roland synth for over 20 years - the GK pickup is in front of the bridge saddles, which adds a bit more delay in the synth tracking than is inherent in the device. It’s like playing against a backing track that’s a hair ahead of me.

This is great fun. I can’t wait for the next tune to be revealed

Rags: "got the water off my chest" -- that's a good thing, I hope?

    Wzpgsr: Lunch at Katz's?

Never: Your sounds great. There's no prohibition against making your own backing track (I did a couple myself). Whatever gets you playing/posting is good. The idea has been to try to be relatively spontaneous and jam-like, in contrast to some of other threads that spend more time on each tune, but beyond that there are no hard and fast rules. I recorded mine direct into GarageBand. The sound is Garageband's "British Combo" with the gained turned most of the way up, with a little slapback delay and a small hall reverb.

The rest of you lollygagging lurkers -- jump in.

Not true. Lots of people do (with BIAB, etc) and they're often much better than the YouTube ones.

    Ah, you're new, I can tell :-)

(But seriously, yes, it's fun, and really good for learning stuff)

I don’t consider using BIAB to be making your own backing track. I’ve set up my little recording “studio” with a band in my own box - I made a DAW project with a series of virtual instruments already in tracks, and my keyboard is sitting on the counter ready at a moment’s notice (another good tune!). I have drum patterns in there too, so making a 2 minute quartet track takes me 10 minutes.

Well. in the sense it's programmable.

Lately I’ve been using Mr. Sunny Bass’s bass lines with or without added drum tracks. Usually he’s pretty solid, but in his Stolen Moments track there’s a definite hiccup in time when he starts walking for the solos. I don’t feel like doing much surgery, so I’ll likely just do a duo with him. Lately I’ve been comping a bit on my takes as well—I figure at a jam session a guitar player might have to comp as well.

I wish. It's closing in on 15 years since I left New York, but I still dream of real pastrami.
