Here's a clean version on my Seventy-Seven Hawk Jazz archtop. I had done a bunch of these before the overdriven one I posted upthread, but wasn't loving them which is why I decided to switched it up with the overdriven sound and more legato/fusiony style. I did one take of that and called it a night. I went back and listened just now, and the cleans ones are all actually OK. I guess I was just in a crabby mood on account of having my moments stolen. This is actually the first take from the clean bunch, too. Goes to show ...

No video with any of these. When I record direct, it's a bit of a PITA to also shoot video and then marry up the two, and I wasn't in the mood.

Been meaning to do this tune for ages, so now's the time!

Rags: I thought you had posted two takes of this, but now I see only one? Anyway, the one that's the air, I found that the comping makes the tune feel almost like it's in 6 (very hard for me to detect the 4/4 quarter note). Interesting effect.

Wzicaneverembertheresrofrheinitalsinyournoniker: great sound, lots of good stuff. I'm prepared to face the music with the thunk police. TBH, nobody goes to Katz's anymore. It's too crowded.

Graham: Very cool take. Now's the time? I see what you did there.

I've done one audio clip and a video but I took the video down because it was too fast. I've done another one. This is at the same speed as the Oliver Nelson Septet version.

The rhythm's like this. I just play it naturally so I suppose I invented it. But there is a 1 and 3 bass underneath it on all my other audio and vid clips (but not this one). It's probably too soft to hear, or just indistinct. But the thing is that it's noticeably obvious when it's not there, so I don't know.

JGBE Virtual Jam (Round 58) - Stolen Moments-kkkkkkkkkkkkkkk-jpg

But I definitely wanted to do a video of this before we move on. I've left out the head again because it would make it long and I'm basically only interested in the soloing. I do wish I could get the volume and clarity up but there we are. Too bad :-)

How are you mic'ing the guitar? This video sounds better to me, a bit higher levels and the playing is more dynamic and bluesier, but the backing still has this kind of "3" feel to me. On the original, there's a bit of that on the head, but the solo section is all walking baseline with a clear 4/4 swing time. So, to me anyway, the effect of what you're doing is to play a different song. I get that you're working with technical/recording limits that you either can't solve or don't want to fuss with, and this all just casual exchange of blowing tunes, not an exercise in optimization of the recording arts. So I'm not going to push the point. But a half (or quarter ...) decent USB mic and some way to get more realistic bass sound might be worthwhile [I'm always happy to budget other people's money ...].

Probably the best take I've heard from you. Something about this tune seems to bring out the best. I thought John's first take (the raucous electric) was among his best as well, and would probably say the same about mine. Grahambop's take, as always, is like a little master class for the group.

Oh, I've answered all this a hundred times! My electric archtop's in storage and the acoustic doesn't sound right with a proper You Tube style backing track, too thin and weedy, I can show you if you want. I have a good mic but that means an audioface and they cost money. I do put a bass in using Audacity by playing it normally and then dropping the pitch an octave. But it has to be minimal or it booms... etc, etc. I'll think on it but, to be honest, I've already thought on it. I guess I'm stuck where I am. I'm only sorry you have to suffer it!

I agree about the backing turning it into another song, etc. That is, I agree on the rhythm. If I play a walking bass (as above) it booms and doesn't sound quite right. I could try it in octaves and then comp at random over it - but without drums I'm not sure it would work. But I will start experimenting again. You never know, something good might happen.

But thanks, you're absolutely right to speak your mind.

(PS. Your third choice tune coming next...)

The best take ever on any tune? Not sure about that! Have you heard my Autumn Leaves?

But thanks, I hear you. Quite right about Graham, of course, he's an excellent player and certainly knows his bebop stuff. I actually thought (if he's there) this one was possibly on the slow side for him, not that he couldn't do it. I'd say he was more at home with speedier bebop tempos. Maybe he could say something about that himself.

After clearing several feet of snow from my guitar I manage to once again rise from the ashes like the Phoenix. Wish I could participate more but February is a busy month for my job. Anywho, Stolen Moments is among one of my favorite songs of all time. One of those recordings that never get old listening to. I never bothered to learn it though over the years until this passed year. I didn’t have time to do a more intimate recording like I usually do with backing track so here is a version from not too long ago with a drum and bass trio.

If you're willing/able to spend a little money you can get a surprisingly good sounding USB mic or a basic interface for surprisingly little. As I said, always happy to budget other people's money.

Thanks! I certainly have more time for playing now I’m retired, it probably helps.

Oh I wouldn’t say that, I like ballads and slow tempos just as much. There are some examples in my youtube/soundcloud stuff.

I guess you may be thinking about the sixteenth-note stuff I was doing. On this tune, I probably felt after a few choruses it was natural to go into the double-time stuff to give it a certain intensity which seemed to fit the minor vibe. But I started it off more simply, and chucked in some octaves later. Just trying to keep things varied, I guess.

    Hi!

This is the first time i participate in one of these threads, but it's interesting to hear everyones different takes on this tune, so i thought i'd throw together a quick take of my own.

This is the first time i have played this tune, but i took a quick look at the head and used the bass from iReal imported into Logic, put on a drum loop and a rhythm guitar. I realised i made the backing track a bit too short, because just as i was getting into it it was over.

Real nice, thanks for joining in. This group can't survive without fresh meat, so be sure to check back tomorrow to see what tune is called next.

Not as far as I know - I don’t hear it!

As I recall this tune (You’ve Changed) was done a few years ago for the ‘practical standards’ thread.

I`m going to be quite busy the next month or so, but after that i can probably come up with a suggestion for a tune. Sounds like fun.
