Yeah I think though that while the charts for 30 standards give long stretches of chords in practice I play a lot of subs in that music. A lot of motion.
Tends to be different stuff than when I play bop. When I play bop I might use more ii v’s sideslips etc. When I play swing I use more common tone dim stuff, for instance. I don’t do this too consciously, I just go to what seems right for the gig by ear. I’m not going to be playing stride piano cliches on a contemporary jazz gig (except for a bit of humour.)
It’s just that the real book gives one set of subs for a certain point in jazz history. So people think standards have lots of chords, rather than structurally not that many. Also harmony is often approached in a middle out way than a top down way from the melody or lead line:
The thing is most styles have a set of cliches and tropes that get used to death. This is most certainly as true of post Rosenwinkel jazz guitar as it is of Django.
