Dang...
Slightly different vibe on "Out of Nowhere"? I think Parker's take is sublime. Pretty much melody throughout. Amazing to leave that much "space" while playing so much.

Hey, Matt! Thanks for that post I know I can come off as opinionated - that's the 'nice' way to describe it, isn't it?
And I certainly respect your musicianship - I was pretty impressed with your version. I know it strains credulity when one doesn't back the talk up. I'm older than you, which probably means a whole lot less tech savvy. My teenage son reminds me of that fact daily. I just got a 'smart' phone - but I don 't feel any smarter for it really.
One of these days I'm gonna get some apps, too.
This thing with my uncle kind of took the glow off the day, so to speak. He is a real fine pianist and a retired doc. But I'm sitting down now to try and get this thing done and finished. I just want to get the damn thing up. I know no one else really gives a crap - rightfully so. The world won't spin off its axis.
Thanks to DJangoles for that link to clear up that melody segment. I just listened one more time to Sinatra to try to get it in perspective. But I'm going to finish the recording and post. I want to get on with things. But I have to say what I said is true. I didn't know this song till someone suggested it. Some say it's isn't difficult and that is true, but for some reason the melody twists were bothering me. Not usually a problem but maybe I'm getting a bit addled.
I apologize for the crack about appearance - hell, I scare myself when I look in the mirror these days. I'm just frustrated. It has been a tough year. And a mea culpa for all my sins of pride and arrogance. Anyway, I'm going back to create this magnum opus. Available for free soon on Sound Cloud.
I hope Sinatra doesn't turn over in his grave.... Jay

Not in any meaningful way. Usually the amp is on and covers that up. I just used to have trouble being to busy when I played so I figured if I sang I'd have to breath (literally and musically) eventually. Has some secondary benefits as well

Richb is always harsh, but sometimes he's right on the money. Only time will tell whether he was prescient or not.

I've taken another shot with an imported irealb track and reaper (direct). I've never used reaper before. Let me know how I did. Sorry for the mistakes (especially in the head).
Thanks for listening. Comments are very welcome.

More the merrier. The first 16 bars, or so were figured out, the rest is noodling, licks and muscle memorry.

Quite unique. Did you do this in Sibelius?

Well, that's just life Stan. Let's give him a break, I've given Jay plenty of shit about this recording, but family's family.

I get it, and if it is all true, my heartfelt condolences go out, but a line was crossed yesterday with that swipe at Matt.

I used to use backing tracks but don't anymore. I find that I use different chordal rhythms in order to get a certain feel. I find that I can use my own style of chordic playing to give my melody better phrasing. I'm currently using audacity to record my chords then practice over them and upload them to sound cloud. The way I do is to plug a cable into my guitar then plug the other side of the cable into the input port on my tuner. Then I have a headphone jack connecting my input port on the tuner to the mic port on my computer. Then I set it as my default device and record in audacity. It makes for a much cleaner natural sound than a mic and an amp. This is especially helpful since I don't have a good mic. Here's a sample of what I did using that method.

Matt now has an epic forum signature! Played like a true improviser man.

LOL!!!! I just noticed!

No big deal. I'm getting back on the bike. :-) Foot injury has taken its toll on my running miles the last few weeks. I still can't run for a little while.
I had also come straight from driving a school bus and admit I looked a little rough. Don't really care that much. My real recording setup is on another machine with Reaper. It's just easier to throw out a video on my office computer like I do for a few students.
By the way, I don't remember who recommended Sony Vegas, but it's pretty nice for recording audio and video simultaneously. The audio can be edited as its own thing, and it's got a nice parametric EQ, reverb etc. I ended up going without any effects because it sounded pretty good , straight into a Scarlett two-channel interface from whatever that AKG mic is that it's in the picture. Super easy set up.

Well...in my part of the world Sunday is just about gone...and still no upload.

This thread is turning into a clusterf**k.

It did that over a week ago. Tomorrow we should have a new set of life and technical obstacles to recording a minute of a 32 bar chorus.

Ciao, amici miei!
Well, I uploaded my version of Out of Nowhere to Sound Cloud - I think. As far as I kwow, I did the upload. But for all the simplicity (supposed) of the process, I'm still not sure! On my computer right now I have the minimized thing that kept saying I still has an unfinished upload. So I'm going to try and verify that it is there and figure out how to post a link. I'm not sure it even has a title. It is done and finished as far as I am concerned. I'm going to try and make sure it is there. Technology is cool but also kind of a pain in the ass.
-
What do I have to do? It is on Sound Cloud on my page Jay DeLuca. Do I have to set up something? It works when I click the link above. Try it again, Dan.

It works now. You just had the wrong link.

Oh, man! At one point I linked to some god awful punk band at extreme volume! Almost blew out my eardrums. I'm so sorry if that happened to anyone. It was a mistake for sure.
Dan, I deleted that GDamn Red bullshit link - can you delete your message with the link in it? I don't want anyone else to suffer partial hearing loss from that crap that was somehow on my page! I would appreciate as I really do not want anyone to suffer from that garbage.
Intuitive, my ass....

Jay, if you ever double track your voice on a recording again, you should be smacked. This is how it sounds good, right here, pure, simple, good.
As for the guitar, i think you felt pressured to do too much...the "lead" trounces all over your vocal, and the time is way off.
i think your strengths are obviously vocals, and a simple nylon string accompanyment of your voice. And there's no need to do much more really...you could have a gig in any of the places i've played in the last year doing just that. The only weakness of the recording was the improvisation, just too busy and too out of time to judge it's merits.
Just giving an honest read...i owe you that.

I made the friggin' deadline, EDH, even if the link gave us a bit of trouble... Seems to be working now. Say, didn't I send you a transcription sometime past? Maybe I'm wrong, have to check my messages sent.
