I practise Pat Martino minor lines/activities/ in every key in this way:
    I start from gm7 next cm7,fm7,bbm7,ebm7,abm7,dbm7...etc
Looks like 5 first activities are in the 3 position of the fretboard.
It is good way to start with chord before playing line.
It is good exercise for coordination right hand technique.
Do not do it fast.Start with slow tempo.Use metronome or backing track.
I use down and up picking technique for all lines/no legato..etc/,chords I play by my fingers/pick is between fingers/.

All lines you can find in Pat Martino book" Linear Expressions".

    Hello Kris!
Fine lines, thank you for this very interesting approach!
I really appreciate Mr. Martino, he sounds so..., great!
Had the chance to watch him at a concert!
Now, to your lines: did you recognize any repetitions or similarities in the changes? - Kind of "shiftings", like that...?
Let´s find out his approach, would be very interesting and would us help on our way, no?
Kris, keep posting your ideas, all the best!

I loved that Man! Great Tone and nice full notes. I would love to structure my practice this way. For now, I have other musical pursuits that I need to finish first. You gave me a great thought and that is to use your technique when I start working on his song, "Impressions." For now, I just have to be happy with learning songs as they are transcribed. Eventually, I hope to be able to improvise relatively freely. Eventually....

A tip for the usage of the linear expressions: I found out you can play these lines, starting at any chord tone of a dominant7 chord. Best results are: Starting from the seventh, the b9/#9, the sixth and the #5.

Hard to practise, but you are going to explore fresh sounds!!!

It is normal sub for minor lines playing over dominant chord I think.

Yes, but Pat mixed up all the modes plus melodic minor in these forms.
That makes them sound so interesting.

You should purchase his method book, 'Linear Expressions'. In it, he explains the basic concept of how he converts every chord to a minor chord and approaches it like that...

Here it is: Amazon.com: Linear Expressions (9781423460893): Pat Martino, Tony Baruso: Books

I pull Linear Expressions off the shelf every 6 months or so just because the lines are so much fun to play.

I also have a book of Martino transcriptions by Wolf Marshal which shows how Pat uses these ideas. You'd be better of transcribing Pat's solos, but if you're a lazy git like me this is an easy way out. And if you shoplift it from the music store it's really affordable. [snicker guffaw]

These lines are really easy to memorize, because they seem so logical and melodic

yes...but not so easy to play in fast tempos and in every key.
