    No, it might have started that way (for Elmo) but it became the Maj6o scale. So Elmo played a single note run with that added note and BH recognized it as a scale (“my scale”) which can be harmonized (“pick a note, skip a note”) as a sequence of sixth chords and diminished chords. Barry’s added note rules are separate (“for improv”) from the scales used to generate harmonic movement. When he says “we are scale players, not chord players” he is referring to harmony (“scales of chords”), not lines.

    Interesting, I always assumed he adapted it from block chording.
