I tend to try and understand what the tune, song etc... is after harmonically.
Again personally, I want my comping to reflect what the composer, arranger or solist is after. Generally one makes quick analysis of the chart. From that analysis you will have Harmonic organization which reflects the melody and style. You still need to use your ears...LOL
Part of comping in a Jazz style is not just playing the basic changes...you make choices as to what are the Tonal Targets and how they are organized. Which allows you to play Chord Patterns that help expand the harmonic background for the melody and allows the improv to develop... not just the soloist.
Melodies and soloing imply... harmonic organization. Being aware of where from... and how the implied harmony is organized... is really required to be able to comp in a jazz style. Being able to imply harmonic organized context, even when not always actually played is part of playing in a jazz style.
Basic Chord Chart Notation can be seen easily from becoming aware of all the chords derived from scales etc...
Then you need to apply functional organization... Targets and how they relate etc...

The French sixth is no way shape or form French.
That said it does feature very heavily in Nuages.
