Knowing the melody well and knowing good chord changes is essential in jazz music.
I mean jazz standards.
It's a pity that Ireal Pro doesn't have melodies in tunes and during jam sessions musicians only look at chord changes often without knowing the melody .I know from experience that it doesn't bother them.

By the way, the last part of that 30 minutes of practicing the melody can be a video of multiple takes, which may help some with performance anxiety... then, of course, choose the best one to upload!

It does and it would make a very good football chant

I needed an easy Jazz blues to play, so I repeatedly listened to the 'Blue Bird' theme for a while, then sang-a-long to the theme, then played the theme on my guitar for about 30mins. Then I notated what I thought was the theme and and chords. (No need to record a video.)
I know it's an easy theme, but the 30min 'Just Melody' idea worked very well.

I'll go to my grave saying that Giant Steps is actually a really catchy tune.

I suppose this thread is my chance to work on techniques I've avoided for so many years like playing the melody in harmonics and as a two-part invention.

Suppose it could be if it had better lyrics, they're not at all memorable.

I've definitely spent my 30 mins on this. I took a tune that I didn't know, had never done, and did it several ways -- But Beautiful, the one just before Bye Bye Blackbird in the RB.
First was with a 'metronome' beat to it. That's because it's very slow with big gaps and it would be too difficult to do it accurately unless it was done rubato. So it had a beat.
Then I put a bass line in which made it a bit more palatable.
Then I put the chords in which was better. Then I did a solo over it. I enjoyed doing that, I think it's what this music is all about otherwise you're just copying a melody really, although it has to be done.
I don 't suppose anyone's very interested but that's okay, your own stuff is far more gripping :-)

Sounds nice, rag. You've inspired me, melody #4 for me will be "But Beautiful."

Oh, by the way, it's basketball that is all life consuming right now, not baseball. Outdoor baseball in January in Chicago would be crazy... Even though it's cold here but not COLD yet. That's likely coming though...

That makes more sense, sorry!

Just to be clear, "performance anxiety" is a specific term pertaining to those who perform in public, and since, as far as I know, ragman does not perform live, it's not surprising he would not have a problem with it.

Every time I hit record on my phone and attempt to play something, I get a bit of performance anxiety... or whatever it is (anxiety is a negative way to look at it).

Excellent, Allan. Good choice.
My, you have come a long way from back when! In terms of learning jazz, etc, that's a steep curve. I hope you don't mind my saying that, but true it is. Remember the dogs running up the stairs while you messed up the head of whatever-it-was? I do.
See, I'm being paternal :-)

It was a clip of summertime. You pushed me in just the right way, at just the right time and I’m grateful for it.

I just looked it up. Only 3 years. That's impressive.

That was 2021. It was all the gigs and jam sessions that got me together.
Well, the preparation for said events.
