I recently had a six-month checkup after cataract surgery. My left eye's vision is not as good as my right's but it's not bad enough to need prescription glasses. I was advised to use 2.5 drugstore reading glasses and that's what I do. They're fine. (I do keep a magnifying glass in the kitchen to read small print cooking directions.)
I will say this: it is MUCH easier to read sheet music than tablature.

That's been the case with me since long before my vision began to deteriorate. I suspect the fact that I see no value in tablature, thus never bothered to try to learn it, has something to do with that.

My post cataract has me functioning without glass to do most anything even read things not too small. My right eye is plano for sphere and -1.25 cylinder ( astigmatism). I see about 20/40 so that is my up-close eye for reading. My left eye a bit over corrected with some astigmatism, but I can generally see 20/25 or 20/30. With glasses for distance, I get 20/20 but with them on I cannot see upclose at all.
I take though after the retina detachment in left eye. Bottom line is I need those cheaters to read music.

Had both eyes done. Chose distance. Great! Got prescription glasses for reading, lost them a year ago. Bought readers @$35. Work fine. I agree with sgosnell. Don't overcomplicate it.

Good luck, deacon mark. I had both eyes done a few years ago and ... never looked back
.
New lenses correct for astigmatism and - just like my old Kodak Instamatic focus well from an arms length to 10m. I have glasses which improve a bit farther than that (which I rarely use) and other glasses for reading or detail work.

Post surgery and I use the bigger iPad for nearly everything including notation. Instant access, blow up a few measures. I can see it fine on a table 2-3’ away. 2.5 readers for up close reading, what little I do.
These days if I want something from a printed source I take a pic. The pad is just too easy to use.

I guess I should post and update from 8 months ago. I opted for distance correction only in both eyes. The only change to this was to leave my right eye slightly less than perfectly corrected for distance vision. This would allow me some up-close distance instead of everything up close being blurry.
Given my LASIK history the formula they use to get the lens power is modified. This makes outcomes a bit less predictable. My dr did a superb job. My left eye is fully corrected for distance, and I see better with it for things 12 feet and beyond. My right eye came out great, and I can still read reasonably up close. I can look at my iphone and see things, sometimes for really small text I need readers. I actually use readers quite a bit as they allow both eyes to see and read together. My left eye is not good with anything up close. I easily use one eye for up close and one for distance.
My nature is to be informed and a researcher so officially my post RX eye prescription has my left eye at +.05 for sphere and my right eye is actually Plano correct for distance with no need of glasses. I have slight astigmatism in both eyes which is called the cylinder and they are -1.25. The bottom line is I do not need glasses for anything I can pass a driver's test my vision is a fuzzy 20/25 at distance. I can get most of the chart. I use glasses for really small print but practically I don't need them. With my full correct distance vision is do see 20/20 with both eyes. I have pairs of cheap +2 readers sitting all around the house. In the end I am happy person over this outcome.

I've circled the Sun 79 times, with retina lasering and cataract operations starting over two decades ago. My vision is OK considering; no problem with driver's license or sheet music (except I barely comprehend it, the same with tablature.) Several of my 80 +/- buddies have gone through cataract operations lately or stand in queue. Most seem to prefer pad over paper. There's something into it - yesterday I spent several hours filing loose sheets accumulated over the past year or so. The same work for band #2 still ahead.
