I call it a drag from my phone because it's usually depressing. Except this forum.

In addition to this forum, I use Facebook. I have unfriended all the people I know who seem to need a platform to virtue signal their political views (I have other ways of contacting those folks who are of value to me). For me, all the unfriending has made the Facebook experience way more pleasant. I do enjoy the guitar porn and the historic photos that people share on Facebook. And I do keep in touch with some old friends on that platform.

This forum is a mostly collegial place where some great deals on guitars happen, and some great music is shared, so I am active here. There are forums for my other hobbies (motorcycles and backpacking), but I have never signed on to any of them or any other guitar forums as between Facebook and this place, I probably already spend too much time online.

Remember folks, there is more to enjoy in life than just sitting in front of your computer or staring at your smartphone.

As an ORG (Old Retired Guy), I have a lot of disposable time and spend it at the keyboard/monitor, because it's easier to read four newspapers and a handful of special-interest forums that way. I don't post anything on my own FB page but do read whatever my handful of friends post--they are nearly all far away and I don't get to see them the way I did when there were annual conferences and such. This forum is a wonderful place to hang out and eavesdrop and occasionally kibitz--it's like sitting in a corner of a musicians' after-hours bar, listening to the stories and grumbles. I've learned a lot about gigging and playing that I wouldn't have learned from my folkie playing-out experiences.

But I still read books (and still write reviews) and watch movies and play out (not enough) and help run the local folk society concerts, so it's not like I'm glued to a screen. And it's never a phone, unless I'm shopping at Target or forced to look up something when I'm away from home--that's the OG part of ORG. (Nor am I a Luddite--too many years as a tech journalist and computer dweeb for that. I just don't find a phone big or powerful enough for anything serious.)

I'm retired too. My history is alarming so I use the internet to wipe out my existence from 1982-87'. AI might be just a search engine but it's amazing how you can sort out the past with it if you use it right.
I don't like cell phones. I just use it for calls and food deliveries.

I'm ghosting everyone I met between 1979 and 1987. I was In California for most of it. 6 months in Japan. They're not looking for me and I'm not looking for them.

JGO is the only social media I use. Even though I’ve been playing forever, I still learn stuff here.
A few years ago I had a new band and CD and got on Facebook to help promote gigs.
I found it to be a relentlessly depressing experience.

I met up with a forum member in Vegas in 2017. He helped me out after heart surgery. At 78 he's almost exactly 10 years older. Now he's a tenant in Yuma. He works a lot doing food deliveries.
He plays guitar but leans more towards art. We're looking to make a big score and he needs a certain kind of buyer. I'll get a commission. He spent most of his years in California and knows it as well as anyone.

I got into some drama overseas 40 years ago and it turned into an international catastrophe. I'm working on it.

I’ve noticed that checking where my time goes online makes me a bit more honest about my habits. I even ran a quick Social Media Background Check on myself once, just out of curiosity, and it showed some patterns I didn’t expect. It helped me cut back on a few rabbit holes I kept falling into and made my forum time feel a bit more intentional.

I tried joining X last fall but I feel like that kind of social media is pure brain rot. I closed the account a couple months ago. Like FB I just found myself getting pissed off by fools posting foolish stuff. I had been posting on another guitar forum but everyone was obsessed with rock and talk about the same crap all the time so I pretty much quit there last fall. I'm still friends outside of it with several great members I met there so I felt like I walked away with the best of it intact.

I go to the Trumpet Herald forum once in a while but for the most part JGF is the only social media I really fool with, and to be honest, musically it has been the most worthwhile.

I like instagram because there’s lots of people posting music. I mean my corner of it is like that. I understand it has different corners.

I rarely go on Facebook these days. I think TikTok might be a cognitohazard. Reddit is mostly a ticket to poor mental health, but it does have its moments. Obviously I’m a YouTuber.

As for the others, I can’t say I see the appeal.

You know, I miss MySpace. Simpler times.

No involvement in most for me. I subscribe to 2 YouTube channels; JGO and Christian's (which I've found to be incredibly helpful). The rest (FB, IG, X, etc) seems to be focused on time wasting.

Nothing else. This is it. I used to go on several other guitar forums, but I quickly realized that it was all about young guys waving their ding dongs around. Life’s too short for that @#$&. I don’t do FB or any of those other sites either.

I very much enjoy this site. Always informative and civilized!

    Well done folks!

I juggle a bit of time on other platforms, mostly just to keep an eye on where my photos end up. I once found an old profile pic floating around somewhere it shouldn’t, so I ran it through the Face2Social tool and it helped me spot a few stray accounts fast. Since then I’ve kept my social use pretty light and stick to stuff that feels worth the time.
