Yes, our opinions on an artists work do not invalidate them.

It was probably more complicated.I think it was all about the style.

And no, your solos don't count as a composition. Specifically in jazz every visible artist also a great musician by default. You can't start your career by only playing your own shit, not in jazz. So, that's a main distinction.

Artist or musician?

Not to be a fuss bucket but you can't see or touch music so I don't see musicians as 'artists' but that's the way it is.
-
So if I paint something, I'll already be an artist.

Yes, "artist" is a word with a range of meanings, but if we're talking about art, then anybody who produces art is an artist. This is Aesthetics 101, with a generous dose of Semantics 101. It might not be very good art (whatever that means), but the intentional production of an object or performance for some purpose beyond the merely utilitarian--for enjoyment or appreciation--is art. And even utilitarian objects can have an artistic dimension, either in overall design or via application of some decorative element--a fancy belt buckle or brooch.

The tricky semantic territory is generally those objects whose production requires a hard-to-replicate design or technique, especially when application seems to depend on intuition more than by-the-book protocols and/or shows finesse--"What a welder--he's a real artist."
BTW, a major moment of understanding came when I realized that teaching English is a performing art.
(Stringswinger made a similar point much more economically, but I can't restrain myself.)

Ridiculous.

By your criteria, how is a painter an artist? They merely use existing colors to make existing shapes?
Michelangelo merely used existing stone to copy the shape of a man for Adam.
Ridiculous.

Art or humor? (humor is art)

Yeah Segovia would not entertain Funky Summertime for one moment. Artist.

For me I fear the answer is yes. I am not an artist.

Sometimes people use the verbal term: ."..But you are an artist..."
I'm not sure if this term is used all over the world...
It is not about art.
-
Exactly. Of course he is, but that's what I'm saying, the whole thing is so subjective.

Or maybe a real artist is the person who gets a medal or a distinction for his work....?

A jazz musician plays jazz, a jazz artist paints jazz musicians...
-
Ok, any jazz greats you can name who never performed and recorded their original music?

Isn’t Fried Bananas a Dexter original?
