Listening to KC albums from Poseidon to Lark’s Tongues—very few bands have had the energy and impact of KC during that 4-year period.

They’re all great albums, with a lot of spectacular moments. IMO they’ve never put out a bad album. Over 50 years of consistent quality…

Standouts from this period are the Devil’s Triangle psychedelic noise-storm on Poseidon, and the jazz-influenced Lizard and Islands albums. The boys were listening to a lot of modal jazz and basically wanted to take off from Miles on Bitches Brew, which IMO they did in a very interesting way.

Very heady stuff that is certainly outside the realm of pop or even rock music. And along the way Fripp was pushing the envelope on what sounds one could coax out of a guitar…the mad professor of RNR.

One of my favorite live solos of all time:

The cool thing about King Crimson is, you could slide that "4-year period" window backwards (by one album, to their debut) or forwards by...um...[starts counting on fingers] at least six albums and arguably eight or nine, and it would still be a true statement re: energy and impact.

E.g., the "One of my favorite live solos of all time" excerpt appears to come from an album that was two records and one year outside the 4-year period you referenced.

I will admit, you are one of the few KC fans I've ever encountered who cite Islands (and, by inference, Earthbound) among your favorites.

I saw KC in '71 in my home town in the UK. I was 15. Sitting on a bar stool no more than 15 ft away was RF with his Black LPC and a Marshall full stack behind him blasting out Schizoid Man. Gives me goose bumps even now thinking about it.
ps God! It was loud. I have the tinnitus to prove it!!!!!

I don’t know that Islands is my favorite, but it’s quite a good album. Sailor’s Tale in particular is a standout cut. I’ve only heard Earthbound a few times, because it was hard to get as an album BITD and wasn’t available streaming for a long time. The main issue there is the fact that it was recorded on cassette tape, so the audio quality is lacking.

I only saw them once, in November 1981, but it was a VERY MEMORABLE show. First date with Cathy, a girl who loved prog rock and art rock and Zappa as much as me. Great, high energy show at the Agora in Atlanta. We were dancing at the very front just under the stage.

And then we went home, smoked a spliff or 2, listened to Discipline, and, well, as the song goes you can guess the rest.

New interview with Richard Sinclair of Caravan, Hatfield and the North, and Camel.

"I never considered I was playing in a progressive rock band until I joined Hatfield and the North. And then really, the progression was from jazz rather than rock...People say, 'Well, What about Genesis and Yes and King Crimson? What about this, what about that? Well, I really didn't follow it."
    ...

"I enjoyed Hatfield and the North a lot more because I was listening to a lot of jazz at the time and was introduced to a lot of great jazz by Phil Miller and Pip [Pyle] in a big way. I got on okay with Dave Stewart, but I found it to be a bit more of a straight vibe with him. He wasn't so rock and roll, if you like. He is very dedicated to forming the music and actually reading and writing music. I wasn't a reader but I practiced 24 hours a day.

Did anyone else see BEAT on tour this year? They played most of Discipline, Beat, and Three of a Perfect Pair. I thought they sounded great.

Yep, I saw them almost exactly a year ago when they came to Tucson.

I've seen King Crimson in concert seven or eight times over the years... the BEAT show was better than at least three of those KC shows.

I went on a kick a year or so back, listening to and rating the first half dozen Crimson albums.

When I got to Larks, seeing the other perfect 10's I had given, I gave it an 11.

When I was in 8th grade, my math teacher offered a secret prize to whoever could solve a problem. I solved the problem, and got Larks Tongues In Aspic as my prize. Took it home, put it on the record player and … WTF? That’s pretty much how I still react to it.
