That descending minor line that goes min-min(maj7)-min7-m6 is in a number of jazz tunes and can be used as a fancy sub for a minor chord. It's also a common progression in a lot of latin tunes and pop tunes too. For example the beginning section of Stairway to Heaven is that min-min(maj7)-min7 progression in A minor, with a voice on top that ascends from A to the 9th to the b3rd. On Stevie Wonders hit "Don't You Worry Bout a Thing" the chorus is that descending minor chord thing.
Other common usage is as a iminor chord in a minor key, derived from the harmonic or melodic minor. Many times though a min7 chord is subbed for the m(Maj7). However when improvising lines over the im7 it's common to use m(maj7) lines over the m7 chord sub. Same thing is true for the descending minor progression, you can treat it as one big m(maj7) chord.
I know a great book that will get you up and running on jazz soloing fast. The best most comprehensive method I've seen in book form. Cuts through the confusion and gets you the info that will get you gigging.
