    Hi, I have this basic chord progression which goes:
    am7-dm7-e7

    and i'm looking for any chords to either add to the progression or substitute that could bring diversity to my playing.

    If you have any idea or suggestion please let me know!!

    Thanks!

    I think what you have here is a pretty basic C chord progression, Am7 (the vi) Dm7 (the ii) G7 (the V) and E7 (the III). With that in mind you can begin making your standard substitutions.
    I for the VI
    II for the IV
    vii for the V or a tritone
    I for the III
    That's just for starters. depending on the time you can start back cycling, add variations and color tones, etc. There are so many ways to spice it up.

    How long is it hanging around?

    Am7 -> Amin Amin(Maj7) Am7 Am6
    Dm7 -> Dmin Dmin(Maj7) Dm7 Dm6
    E7 -> Bb7 C#7 E7 G7

    We blew the OP's mind, and he's long gone after one post. Don't slip and fall down in a GC parking lot....

    A lot of the replies on this forum, while intended to be helpful, don't seem to consider the level of the player. If someone is playing Am-Dm-E7, an appropriate next step might be learning California Dreaming. It's got Am, Dm, E7 and other interesting progressions appropriate to that skill level.

    To suggest that someone go from Am-Dm-E7 to Mark Levine's Jazz Theory is ridiculous.

    Well to be he did say...

    "and i'm looking for any chords to either add to the progression or substitute that could bring diversity to my playing.

    If you have any idea or suggestion please let me know!!"

    ...and he got some pretty good suggestions.

    Maybe, but a troll is a high possibility as well.

    Uh, no. We have some female members here----not many but a few---and some of them complain from time to time about sexist and / or condescending comments. A recent case involved a guy who was having trouble with an electronic device and said he didn't mean to come off like an old lady (-meaning, I guess, clueless). I don't think he meant any offense, but some women thought, "Really? Is that the best you can do?"

    In full agreement, Mark. Given that most of the responding posters referred to the OP as 'he' and the OP's ID is Gertrude, took those for typical male-centric responses. Given the ID's that folks use, who knows??? But, still think the OP was a [male/female/insert appropriate] troll...
