Thanks for this. You can really see what he's doing.

That chart looks like it's from the Brazilian Realbook, which has been floating around.

I have Toninho's chart from his book. Chord names are different in some cases, sometimes implying different notes. The chord before the #5#9, for example, is a B7b5 on Toninho's chart.

Hey Rick... good to hear from you...

    Isn't it just voicing from Cmm .... 3rd Degree ...Ebmaj7 #11#5 Lyd. Aug. Add the 9th (f) and 13th (C)

    Or 6th degree B-7b5 b13.

I guess you can play the added note game... sound cool etc... but usually becomes muddy etc... limited harmonic organizational applications etc...

Would depend on context and harmonic or melodic analysis .

Try playing Nica's Dream in Cmin.

Would just be one of many voicings when using Chord Patterns to support lead Lines when comping.

    Nobody yet suggested the fingering [11 12 12 12 12 x] ?

    McLaughlin voices E7b13#9/G# [16 17 17 17 17 x] @ 1:05 as a V7 into Am,
on a flat top acoustic with sound hole pickup, so a bit of a reach up there.

Good point about the fingering. Easier to grab and maybe easier to fit into things. Just from the shape I played it and then an Ebm7 and Dm7 -- and liked the sound. Spices up a commonplace move.

In other words, if you can avoid the fingering difficulties created by the interval displacement of the B string (up a 3rd rather than 4th like the other strings), then do so.
