My first “official” solo guitar video of the year, Pure Imagination. Ironically I have spent all week working on an arrangement for Sphere of Innocence by Allan Holdsworth but I didn’t feel it was ready for prime time and I was itching to post something. Plus, all I had in my head all week was the Holdsworth tune and I needed a break. The tunes have very little in common other maybe being written by Englishmen… :-)

Really nice! I've been working on that one for a year, I'm not even close. Wouldn't have thought of playing it up, it has a great feel.

I much prefer this as a ballad but as JGinNJ said, some songs are difficult to arrange as solo guitar pieces, e.g., I have been unable to make Wichita Lineman sound decent.

Excellent job! It was 1976, when I first heard this song done by the late great Lou Rawls, and that great Philadelphia International Records orchestra! Those were the days!

    I like Eric Skye's version:

A bit too plodding, rhythmically speaking, for my tastes - and anyone who uses a capo automatically get disqualified from the solo guitar competition.

Just thought it was a rather ordinary interpretation of the song....

Actually, I discovered that Jake did a rendition of it, which is excellent -- Wichita Lineman #FingerstyleGuitar - YouTube

Here's another great version, by a harmonica player I'd never heard of, with Bill Frisell accompanying.

As to the capo: Eric is a great fingerstyle player who uses open strings at times and the capo facilitates this style. Trust me, he doesn't need it other than for the effect. Check out some of his videos - he does some Miles and Monk stuff. He kind of reminds me of Bill Frisell in some ways - makes me nervous to watch him play.

Lots of great fingerstyle players use a capo just for a different tonality and to be able to use open strings.
