At the moment I'm having a squint at a Musical Guide by Friedrich Erhard Niedt, a contemporary of Bach. It's a hilariously written practical guide to coming up with Baroque suites from figured bass.

    Anyway, it contains this paragraph

”By rights I should now continue and, according to the older tradition, first explain the ancient Greek keys or modes and their properties, which are to be played sadly or merrily, etc. I should also recite them with their old imposing names, such as Dorian, Hypodorian, etc. Such scribbling is impossible for me. I break out in a cold sweat at the mere thought of these follies and I would certainly have to purge myself from both directions if I spoke or wrote much about this matter”.

Reminded me of this forum haha.

It's full of stuff like this

It reminds me of Hans Groiner:

^ Larry Goldings is nutz. He just did some content for Open Studio and it feels like he's struggling to not be Hans Groiner in his regular personality.

So apparently being mad at theory is a centuries old phenomenon.

Did Baroque folks have a version of the "avoid note" controversy in figure bass realizations?
    Did such dialogues occur?
    - Avoid doubling the third in [6 3] chords.
    - Oh shut up. There is no such thing as an avoid interval.
    - Fine. I mean handle with care interval.

That's true, purging oneself from both directions happens often here.

You can remove the words "at theory" from that sentence, they are superfluous.

Goldings has just got funny bones. He can just sit there with a completely neutral expression and I'll find myself laughing.

Soon it will get to the point where someone will just say 'Larry Goldings' to me and I'll be useless for the rest of the day

I think so. He's more innately goofy than pro comedians.
