A music trivia question I suppose.... Does anyone know if this scale has a formal name?
It's a half-whole step diminished scale with the 4th & 8th scale tones removed or a whole-half step dim. scale with the 3rd & 7th scale tones removed. It's constructed by combining two minor triads a tritone apart.

I asked Chatbot (seems confused)
The notes F, F#, G#, B, C, and D form a scale known as the **F# Phrygian dominant scale** (or F Phrygian dominant). This scale is derived from the E harmonic minor scale and is characterized by a flattened second (G#) and a raised third (A#). In this case, it can also be seen as part of the F# Mixolydian mode when looking at the specific intervals.
I asked the internet (now I'm confused)

Well, the scale only has 6 notes.... but I see a pentatonic scale prospect: A Harmonic pentatonic: C-D-F-G#-B-C.
And with the 6th (F#) instead of b6th is good too: C-D-F#-G#-B-C.
I see the second scale is in my pentatonic scale list (in my Slonimsky thread), I called it: A Melodic Minor pentatonic (D13b5/Ab7b5#9).

Maybe second mode of D Hungarian Major
less the tonic (D) of the first mode?

The scale contains the note 'D', but not 'A' - D-F-F#-G#-B-C.

Actually, it's probably not kosher to name a scale after the tonic note and then omit that note, as I did.

However, that is not the Hungarian Major scale. D Hungarian Minor = D-E-F-G#-A-Bb-C# (= D Harmonic Minor with #4).
So Hungarian Major would be: D-E-F#-G#-A-Bb-C#. (= Harmonic Major with #4).
I think I'll just call it the Dom.13b5#9 scale - e.g., D13b5#9 & Ab13b5#9.Last edited by Mick-7; 04-15-2025 at 01:54 PM.
