Forget lead sheets, let's go to the source....

In bar 3, Bird plays: Bb-F-D-Bb-G (Gm7 arpeggio) -A-F#-G-Db. So all the fake books are wrong.

Took a stab at it. Don't know it that well on guitar so I was fumbling through the fingerings.

According to the Owens dissertation there are 14 known recordings. Maybe even more have surfaced in the past 50 years.

All the versions I heard, by Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon, and Sonny Stitt, play the same notes that Bird played in the You Tube recording I shared. There are transcriptions on YouTube too but they are inaccurate.

The CP Omnibook lists: Blue Ribbon 8011, Up Front 171, Charlie Parker Records 407, and Savoy 1108, as it's source recordings for this tune, but I can't tell if those are on YouTube.

This is probably the Savoy session, which is on YouTube (same as the one I shared)

I've been copying the head for Scrapple from this Tenor Sax version on youtube, I find it easier to hear, also I can read the notation of the parts I can't hear. (Yes, I have to transpose to concert pitch)

Head starts at 13secs in the video.

Thanks for the inspirational thread, and the inspirational contributors.

He plays the head just as Bird played it, as I said. His solo is certainly easier to play than Birds.

I've got a May 1949 live (Paris) and Nov 1947 WOR (NY) studio (Dial) recordings on LP here. I'll try to get a clue from them later...maybe today.

I've no idea. Perhaps they've both been recorded somewhere so they're both right. If right is the right word.

No further ahead. The Paris recording is too rough to be of much help. The '47 Dial one is better but you could hear how the older RB version came from it. What's right? No idea..I'm sticking with the version I started with, RB ed.5, at least for now.

What is the source of this chart? The A section matches all the renditions I've heard - by Charlie Parker, Dexter Gordon , Sonny Stitt, and Jim Hall. I can't say if the B section transcription is accurate, haven't checked it.

I've had some time today for recording Scrapple on my new Enya carbon fibre hollow body guitar with built in mini humbucker.

It sounds good to my ears.

It's recorded in the room with a Rhode mic against the speaker.
