Richard Rodgers seemed to relish the challenge of writing completely diatonic melodies that give the impression of chromatic movement via their relatively complex harmonic backgrounds. The Blue Room is another one.

I reckon there'd be a number of tunes from the '20s that would fit the bill. Avalon is one off the top of my head.

It was actually the reverse. He never learned to read music and wrote everything in F# major on a special piano with a lever that enabled him to transpose to other keys.

How are you going to put this music strip on the box? Is it a print out? From what? Will it stick? Will it crinkle?

Does the strip have to fit the tune being played? Most music boxes just play very simple tunes... why not make your own strip? Or paint it on, maybe.
