Straight-ahead: "Bob Brookmeyer Small Band" a/k/a "Live At Sandy's"
Here's one way to be exploratory without being skronky.
Beyond that, it's the Rosetta Stone of how to arrange for a small band to draw an audience into a performance.
Salsa: "Un Gran Dia en el Barrio" by Spanish Harlem Orchestra
Classic repertoire, contemporary energy, contagious joy
Also, this is one of the best-recorded discs I've ever heard. Want to test your hi-fi? Detail and cohesion right here.
Late-20th Century Classic, "Change" by Chick Corea & Origin
IMO this is the uncovered gem in Chick's ouvre. I hear his joyful answer to the question, "If Woody Shaw had lived . . ."
21st Century Classic: "Not For Nothin'" by Dave Holland Quintet
Where are we going? Don't know about you, but I am going to where I can hope to eat Chris Potter's dust as he ventures far ahead.

Can't say enough about those Bob Brookmeyer Small Band records.
To keep guitar in the mix, all of the stuff Chet Baker did with Doug Raney-- must hears
-
Theo Bleckman and Ben Monder "At Night."

-
Do those Bob Brookmeyer albums have Ed Bickert on guitar? (hope, hope!)
-
No, Jack Wilkins--in top form.

Thanks so much everyone for these amazing suggestions - please keep them coming! There's so many albums here to check out - particularly interested in the Jimmy Smith Off the Top album!
Unsure if Kind of Blue qualifies as it's on every top 50 list (but I guess that was meant to be the joke?) Thanks anyway
