That can actually be a plus in places were the melody is static, as in parts of this tune - have some moving harmony beneath the melody. I just don't like most of the chord substitutions, subbing dominant 7th for minor 7ths chords, etc., it's way overdone.

I like the change in bar 5 of the first ending , where there's a full measure of Fm7 and it's replaced with D7#9 on the 3rd and 4th beats - that's about as far as I've gotten.

This is from the Movie Fake Book.....

According to the Jazz Standards site the original key was F. However, here it's all in Eb.

There are no altered notes in the melody. The chords don't matter that much as long as you think in terms of V - I or IV - V - I. It's all secondary dominants and tritones. In fact, I think those chords are derived from orchestral or piano sounds.

Just for fun there's another complex lead sheet. Two variations in one here!

Which is why I just played an alternate tune round the whole thing. Only someone inexperienced would try to play it literally chord for chord, it would just sound weird.

For simplicity there's the Vanilla Book version. Even then it's not worth trying to delineate every chord. So, all in all, this is no longer a hard song to do here on the forum.

I don't think I do this thread hope I am not breaking any rules here is my quick version of the tune. Really a nice one and sometimes take really slow but maybe not so do unless you are a vocalist. I used my Heritage Johnny Smith with the real Gibson JS tailpiece.

There is one, the Ab in bar 1 (in Eb major), which is the #5 (or b13) of the V7 of the IIm7 which follows it - C7#5 (or b13) > Fm7.
Ab is diatonic to Eb but I'd want to play a dom.7th chord there.

That was good harmonically, your rhythm was inconsistent, but I'm sure you know that. With a little practice, it could really swing!

Yes for sure I have not played the tune for years really and probably not really in my bag of tunes. That is why I choose to give it a spin today on nothing really. I go in and out of tempo and you are absolutely correct I just need to practice the tune.

As a kid I watched the original and nothing touches since. Captain Kurt was the original Alpha Male that kept everything going. The Joe Pass of actors at least for the series.
